New Textures for some Karts

Re: PR for STK

Postby S@f » 06 Jan 2013, 23:22

Hello every one!
I'm new to the forum, but I am playing SuperTux Kart for a long time :)
The 0.8 release is very fun!

I have not make new Karts, but i have re-textured one :) It's Hexley.
What do you think of it?

If you want to have this new texture in the game, simply replace the old one hexley2.png in data/karts/hexley by the new one.

New Textures for some Karts

Postby S@f » 07 Jan 2013, 17:49

Auria in this thread said :
I think we could get help with completing a good kart set (karts like Pidgin, Nolok, Suzanne or Emule are excellent for instance, so it would be good if all karts could be brought to this level)

I think it's a very good objective, and i wanted to help the STK community.
I'm not very skill in 3D modelling (I cannot make a whole Kart!), but I can make 2D stuff, so I have re-textured another Kart (the first I have re-textured, was Hexley.)
This Kart is Adiumy, i have not brought it to the level of Emule, Suzanne... but I thought it was a good idea to put Adiumy in a broken egg! :D Before making larger improvements in Kart set, making some new textures can be an easy and time-save solution :)
I have also saturate a bit more the Adiumy's beak, I found it a bit grey and not enough colorful.

If you want to try it, unzip the file AdiumyTexture.zip and simply replace the files egg.jpg, adiumy.jpg in data/karts/adiumy by the new I made.

What do you think of it? Feel free to say what is wrong.

About the license, the egg pictures I used come from http://www.publicdomainpictures.net/ and the tire texture come from Suzanne wheel.diffuse.jpg, made by Céa.

Thanks Ludsky :)
I don't know if the kart is enough cartoonish (because of photo-realistic textures), maybe can I add some egg yolk :D
If a good 3D modeller can make a beautiful Kart with the idea of the broken egg, I think Adiumy will be a very cool Kart :)

I found the floor of Oliver's mathclass too much grey, what do you think of this more educational texture? :D

Maybe it is too much colorful... I don't know...but we can make it in another color like red, orange, pink...

Urgh.

For what? The color? The idea with the text? What kind of texture can we put on this floor?
What can we do to make the floor of Oliver's Mathclass funnier? I think grey is not a color for a STK's classroom!

Don't worry Arthur, I'll find another idea...What do you think of the egg texture for Adiumy, and the sport texture of Hexley?

Another 2D artist ! Welcome ! I really like darwin new texture! But i think the current version of aduimy doesn't need work. Maybe the floor needs work but not this way. I personnaly think Tux kart needs work with the same colors.
I don't have enough time with my studies to do what i want Grrrrr !

Hi,

while I'm not realky convinced by your Adiumy texture (I think the current one is just fine?), the Hexley one seems to be an improvement. I don't think it's yet at the same level as Suzanne or Emule or Pidgin, but I guess improving the kart further might require some modelling.

I would be in favor of integrating your new texture, just specify under which license you release it

I agree that the resolution is low. Who made the suzanne kart? That should be the art style for all default karts. Does anyone know where there are tutorials on how to make art in that style?

Arthur {l Wrote}:Urgh.

T'was also my reaction. A combination of colour, busy-ness, and contrast with the rest of the room.

It's a floor. It should be grey. If you want the floor to be less boring, then you need to add things that make sense, not just add a really noisy texture.

Maybe something like this texture would be better.

Oh, and do you need blender to re-texture a kart or can you just edit a file or something? Also, what is a good program for making textures?

if the texture stays the same "shape" you just need GIMP or something, but if its something else you ill probably have to use blender

Well to be honest, I don't liked the grey floor, too. Mainly not because of it's colourless but because of the low res texture :(

Oh, and to attach a file do you just browse and select the file? Like browse, go to STK, open Data, open Tracks and select the track file?

Hi everyone,

Thanks a lot for your feedback :)

Auria {l Wrote}:I'm not realky convinced by your Adiumy texture (I think the current one is just fine?)

It was just an idea that I had when I saw the texture file name : "egg.jpg". I don't want that you to accept all the things I do :D It's just a proposal, a base-idea for some new Karts or something else :)
I just wanted to see how it can be possible to do this :) It was a kind of experiment, indeed re-textured without remake the UV-Layout and/or the 3D Kart was not easy. For instance the UV-Layout of Adiumy's kart isn't really made for that.
I guess improving the kart further might require some modelling.

That's what I think, but I have not the time and the ideas to model a new Kart.

I modified the old file, but there is no license file attach to the texture. So for the license I think I can place it under CC BY-SA 3.0

I agree with you Totoplus62, Tux Kart needs a new texture like the Hexley one, maybe if I have time :)

charlie {l Wrote}:It's a floor. It should be grey. If you want the floor to be less boring, then you need to add things that make sense, not just add a really noisy texture.

You're right charlie, excuse-me for this noisy texture. But for the record I really see this texture floor in a classroom! In orange and pink! It's a true story :D

RaceAce {l Wrote}:Oh, and do you need blender to re-texture a kart or can you just edit a file or something? Also, what is a good program for making textures?

No, I use just software like GIMP... but I have used Blender to see how the UV-Layout fit to the texture. That is easier.
RaceAce {l Wrote}:Oh, and to attach a file do you just browse and select the file? Like browse, go to STK, open Data, open Tracks and select the track file?

Yes, but I work on a copy in my personal directories, not directly in the Supertux Kart directories.

Hmm, I'm still having trouble attaching a track. When I try to attach it, it opens the file and then says "b3d file name not allowed". How do I attach a track?

Maybe a .zip file can resolve the issue.
I don't know what kind of files formats are allowed to be attach to a post, but I'm sure that a .zip file work well :)
There is maybe also a size limit for the files we attach, I don't know.

Hi everyone !

I have a little time this WE, so I'm back with an alternative texture for Tux Kart :)

What do you think of it?

To try it, download the texture file below, and place it in data/karts/tux/.

That's nice! :)
I think the "tux" on the license plate needs a black oulline but i don't really like the "gnu team linux" sticker

overall good but I think the backplate and front sticker are not convincing. Also, you are sort of in competition with Alternative Tux from the addons, who has a very nice kart model

Does STK support textures that reflect light sources?

http://media.nintendo.com/nintendo/bin/ ... fgukFq.jpg

*edit* I think it is called specular lighting or specularity of objects.
