SuperTuxKart 0.8 RC 1 released

SuperTuxKart 0.8 RC 1 released

Postby hiker » 03 Dec 2012, 05:21

Hi all,

over a year after the 0.7.3 release, we are proud and excited to announce the release of the first release candidate towards SuperTuxKart 0.8!

There have been several bugfixes since the alpha release, new music by Claude Werner (Bollen), tweaks to challenges, and some modifications to tracks (most notably a new shifting sands track, thanks to ctdabomb and kalado).

Please help us test this release to make SuperTuxKart 0.8 a great release! There is also still time to help complete translations.

The main changes since version 0.7.3 are :
  • Story mode and new challenge set
  • Improved AI
  • Skidding and better collision physics
  • Reverse mode
  • New green valley track
  • New Blackhill Mansion track
  • Updated XR591 track
  • Updated Fort Magma track
  • Updated jungle track
  • New music
  • Updated menus

Windows and OSX binaries are already available fro our download page https://sourceforge.net/projects/supertuxkart/files/SuperTuxKart/0.8-rc1/, and Linux binaries should follow soon (tomorrow hopefully).

Feedback welcome!

Congratulations for the new release!
As we (the player base) have already seen in the alpha version, the wonderful changes in 0.8 are remarkably beneficial for the game-play experience. Thanks to everyone who contributed.

A bit too early for that (but thanks nevertheless :) ) - I just realised that I actually used an old executable when creating the installer, and as far as I can see the OSX version includes the old version of sandtrack. I've just updated the windows installer (if in doubt: check the version number in the credits - if it's 'SVN', it's the old version, then you have to download the new installer).

Thank you very much for 0.8 RC 1. It works very well on my Power Mac G5. The icons are displayed correctly in the menu:

but the icons of the add-ons are corrupted:

Could you fix it?

No, we won't - it's up to the individual addon designer to provide standard confirming textures. Please contact them. We actually indent to post more rigorous guidelines for addons, and perhaps clean them up later.

NOOOOOO!!!!

Hmm, what about a sort system. By default it would display the ones that follow the guidelines, but you can ask it to show all. Because if stuff has to follow guidelines some great ideas may be squashed and small time modellers may not be able to submit there work. Maybe I'm over doing it but I think you can see my point.

New people can still submit using the alpha (or so) flag, so everyone using artist debug mode can then see them. We are also discussing other ideas here. But the main point is that some of the current addons have problems, which could reflect badly on STK if they are used by unsuspecting players ;)

Install bug, Windows 7: The folder/program group is only created for the admin user. I work with a normal user account, where I also installed the game, but the shortcuts weren't added to Programs for me. When I switched to the admin account, there they were.

And another bug: I created a new player, went to Overworld, played the Math Class on the easiest level. Did not succeed in the challenge, but made a high score, credited to my username. Then I went to Farm track challenge, which I also didn't succeed. I did make a high score though, which was credited to "Guest" instead of the username.

Arg the "guest" highscore problems occurs again :( if you can find a pattern on what makes it happen that would be helpful, so far I haven't really been able to figure what triggers this bug

Sorry, that doesn't help is at all - graphics card limitations might be a likely problem.

Try various settings in the graphics options - lower graphical details, no shaders, perhaps even lower resolution.

Providing a backtrace would be helpful, but that would require you to install VS etc.

Have you checked that you have the latest video driver installed?

i confuse, why that happen only in 0.8 ? then i report some screenshot maybe you people can understand the main problem

Well, we are using a much newer irrlicht version, and we have added a lot of things. It might be caused by using more or larger textures, ... I also noticed that some of the textures are not a power-of-two. While this is actually handed by irrlicht and shouldn't matter, I have seen graphics driver which do not report that it only supports power-of-two textures. You could try checking the textures in one of the tracks, and if you see any non-power-of-two textures resize them (or even just copy a different texture with an acceptable size over them - while this will look odd, if this makes your crash go away it's a hint. And if this doesn't help, replace textures one by one with a power-of-two texture from a track that does work).

gotcha hiker  , looks like the problem come from texture. i try moving all texture ( testing fort magma ) and that track work
i also tried with 10 texture include screenshot, still work. but more than, can't ( for fort magma track) .

i tested on windows Xp too. for fort magma and work, but new problem come. here the screenshot :
bug on fort when use in xp.png
something weird from texture, come only on far angle camera

it happen only on fortmagma, hacienda, mansion and zen garden ... by the way everything except these track, is work as well :D

Is it the number of textures, or a specific texture (or two)? Maybe after using 10 textures you always had one of the few bad textures in your mix?

We can't do much about the number of textures, but if a certain texture or two have a problem, we can try to find out if there is anything odd and if we can fix it.

When I enable internet access the game crashes.

Besides that. it looks GREAT.

Hiker suggested:
That's a bit strange. Any messages printed to the terminal? If you are on windows, right click on the STK icon and select properties, then add --log=file in Target after the double
quotes ("C:\Program...\supertuxkart.exe" --log=file). When you start now the terminal should show the location where the log files are written
(%APPDATA%/supertuxkart/stdout and stderr).
Can you post them (ideally in our forum, since this blog is not really the right platform for this kind of support questions).

You could also try removing the addons - on windows open %APPDATA%/supertuxkart, and rename 'addons' to 'addons.orig', and try again. If this solves the problem,
I would be interested in the contents of addons.orig/*.xml

I have done "--log=file" thing. I end up with 2 empty files stdout.log and stderr.log. The content of my %APPDATA%/supertuxkart can be found here: https://docs.google.com/open?id=0BxdwfAk7IF8ddzM0U1plRWVMWHM

the content of the terminal window:

Error messages and other text output will be logged to C:\Users\XXXXXX\AppData\Roaming/supertuxkart/stdout.log and C:\Users\XXXXXX\AppData\Roaming/supertuxkart/stderr.log

After I enable internet access, I have to replace config.xml with the version before I enabled internet, and I have to delete, or rename, the addons folder.

Oh, my system is a fully updated windows 7 home premium.

It is possible that you downloaded the very first version of the release candidate, which was actually broken? Yes, we managed to mess up the first OSX and windows RC versions independently :( To verify this look in the 'about' section, it shows 'SVN" (or maybe 0.8alpha - can't remember) version, and not '0.8-rc'.

If this is the case, please download the new RC and install it again.

Thanks for confirming this, and sorry for the confusion. I thought I had caught it early enough when I updated the binary, but apparently didn't (and I am not even sure why the wrong version should have caused the problem you described) ... well, it works now, that's the important thing :)

Thanks a lot!

Just want to say you did not post the right version of my swatter .
You put the first one i made (very imperfect version)

This is the right one (the holes are centered and color is better)

Nice version of the game anyway ;)

I think what happened was that it was committed pretty quick and they didn't think that it needed to be improved. After all you're great at this.

I loved the "Story Mode"! It's just so cool!
But the only thing that I don't liked that much was the new music, but, the music's not bad! :)
