Is there any way Voice Over IP could be implemented so that we can talk instead of type, TF2 style?

Red Eclipse supports mumble for voice communications, but someone needs to run a server and you have to connect to it, etc. Unfortunately, something on the scale of built-in voice chat just isn't feasible for such a small project.

Instead of built-in voice chat, what about just extending the built-in mumble control? Couldnt there be a mumble server set up parallel to every game server? And then it just have 3 rooms, neutral, red and blue.
In teamless gamemodes all people could sit in the neutral room. In teammatches, every active player gets moved to red/blue, like in game, all spectators sit in neutral room then.
This could also improve the attraction of duel/survivor mutators, as they just get more social then, and the guys who get kicked out early can at least make jokes about the good players then ;)

+1, however be warned that the main use for VoIP in other games (Counter Strike, UT3, etc.) is: making jokes, loud rage swearing (the common 4 letter words: S-word, F-word, D-word), playing some loud crappy music through the mic so that everyone knows that you like *that* Muzak :x... VoIP is *rarely* used for tactical gameplay.
Personally, I think more standard radio messages (via X, V keys) might do the trick ;)

You're probably right. But if teams are going to be able to make callouts in certain maps, we have to be able to communicate via voice. Because there just arent enough keys available to map out positions on every map, or well I guess just the important ones. And I've always stressed that good clans have communication between them. The make callouts and the get the job done. I suppose I talk like this because I come from a Halo background lol.

I've got to agree on this :/ You'd think everyone would use VoIP for tactics, but sadly, what fluxord says is true 90% of the time. For those that actually do use VoIP for tactics, they could always just launch RE with Steam and use it's voice chat, or Skype, or even just a private Mumble server hosted off one of them. Lot's of people have pretty great internet, so that wouldn't be a problem.
Honestly, I don't think investing the time into a VoIP feature would be wise, considering the above, and that I've seen a lot of RE players not even bother to use text chat.

Why is that a bad thing (besides the music part)? :P Red Eclipse can be goddamn hilarious, like when a bunch of bots best everybody or when someone puts some ridiculous mode/mutator combo like medieval instagib onslaught.

Lol, I played a game like that once, was indeed quite funny. The laughing and joking and having a good time over VoIP isn't the "bad thing", it's the common spamming of obscenities and malice toward other players for reasons unknown. Most FPS's I play, I mute everyone but people I know, because I don't want to hear the bullshit.
Maybe that's just me though. Though I'm not saying "don't add VoIP for only that reason", however. Just listing a few commonalities.

Don't get me wrong. I like having VoIP in games, but if it is used wrong it can be really annoying, specially when there is no mute option.
Also, IMHO the mumble trick that riidom mentioned would work just as fine.

Me and the clan i'm in use a Teamspeak 3 server. I suggest if teams want to get better at communication, someone should invest in some kind of chitter-chatter program like Teamspeak or Ventrilo. Practice makes perfect :D

Oh I agree too, I'm not at all saying VoIP is a bad thing. It can just be abused like fluxord said. And keep in mind that if for whatever reason Mumble, Vent, or TeamSpeak doesn't work, there's always multi-user Steam voice chat ;) Or skype, if you're that desperate.

Lol we use backup Skype sometimes. Xfire is also free, similar to Steam's multi-user voice chat.

I have been using skype with some issues. Sometimes the calls get dropped on Skype when I have more than 4 people on line. Are there any free services I can use for gaming that have better service? Any advice would help. Thanks.

Am I to understand that there is a mumble client built into red eclipse already? If so, I was not aware of this. Setting up a mumble server is fairly trivial. This could be interesting :)

If we can add voice chat to Red Eclipse, I will die happy... voice chat adds a seriously fantastic strategic element to any game, even--*sigh*--Resistance and Liberation.

Lol at Resistance..I should love that game because I own a PS3, but whatever. I guess that's the next step for this game if this game were to add anything else.

Mumble is *supported*, you need to download the mumble client and RE provides positional data to it, so it sounds like the audio comes from a certain direction.

Note: if you update the integration part, you can also get a very neat extra, in addition to just the positional audio:
// Context should be equal for players which should be able to hear each other positional and
// differ for those who shouldn't (e.g. it could contain the server+port and team)

http://mumble.sourceforge.net/Link

That's not server-side though, so it's not really secure or anything.
