I am under the assumption that I could drive the unlocked courses as beginner with only one AI kart and never unlock another course.
I would just like a ball park guide as to the minimal level, number of AI karts, and time to beat.
Is the mastery of a course the same for all courses or different for each course?
For example, if I have the best time with three karts three times, will that count or should I have been racing with 5 karts instead?
If I do master a course will It be announced, or will I need to keep watching for a lock disappear from one of the courses in the menu?
Right now I have the impression that these are all some how discoverable just from playing. Perhaps I do not know what I should be looking for. In which case others may by confused as well.

I assume that you are using version 0.8.1 (or one of our 0.8.2 betas?). In this case you have to play the story mode. It contains all the challenges to unlock all tracks and karts - just drive into one of the bubbles in the 'overworld' (which you will get when you click on story mode), and the exact requirements for each challenge (on the various levels) are shown.

Thank you. Adding your answer to the help screen would certainly help those of us easily intimidated by the story intro.
Tried story mode 0.8.1 and the intro scared me back to thinking perhaps I need to learn how to throw a lot of cupcakes accurately before I even looked at story mode again. By the way thanks so much to all of you for the Win 0.8.1 as in the original windows version I could never get the speed to catch up with the rear of the AI pack. With 8.1 feeling much more competent, except when I tried 9 laps with 10 AI karts. It was a race that felt like Cacophonix of "Astrix and Obelix" was orchestrating all the mayhem.
Will definitely explore story mode now.
