Trouble creating a SuperTuxKart track in blender

Trouble creating a SuperTuxKart track in blender

Postby gsw » 25 Sep 2013, 05:46

Creating a plane in blender and removing an edge seemed like a good idea for creating a start position but having 2 errors trying to export track from blender:

[('WARNING', "object Plane has type property 'start', which is not supported.\n"), ('ERROR', 'Cannot find the B3D exporter, make sure you installed it properly')]

I saw you could Add -> Empty to create a start, but I couldn't figure out how to do it with arrows, circles, etc.

Also, the wiki isn't that descriptive for how to create a track. It would be really nice if someone could put basic step by step instructions that tell you exactly what you have to do in blender. I know that takes some of the fun out of it, but it is not an easy way to make a track. I had started with zero experience in blender, so I'm barely getting the hang of using it to a really limited extent now. I had high hopes that I could just import an svg, extrude it (which I was never able to do), and then somehow drive around the extruded drawing. Not sure why I was thinking it would be that easy. :(

Thanks a lot in advance for any help!

Hello :)

It seems that you don't have installed the b3d exporter. You should install it.

About the creation of tracks. Unfortunately making a track isn't for beginners in blender. We don't have time to explain how to use blender.
I want to make a video tutorial to show the process but I never had time to do it.

However I strongly recommend to follow tutorials on blender and low poly objects. You can try to modify an existing track (moving objects, placing your own object, etc).
That is how I began. You have the opportunity to see how it's done.

Don't be hopeless. Learning a new thing takes time.

Thanks! I don't need to fully be taught blender. once you have blender open and stk files installed, what are the exact steps to create the following:

1. create a start position (how to create the 2 vertices- I know how to select as type start position but I don't know how to create 2 vertices and looked everywhere online and ended up making a plane and removing a side which is invalid and won't work- and it is supposed to be an empty object but I only see options of axis, arrow, circle, etc.)

2. a single square of the track and set to kart path (are these == drivelines/how do i make these lines in blender 2.6?)

3. a checkpoint (how to create the blender object, not just set it as checkpoint)

4. stk lap marker (how to create the blender object, not just set it as checkpoint)

5. stk end of track (how to create the blender object, not just set it as checkpoint)

6. objects like a speed-up track marker, a nitro, a present

7. anything else critical for track to function

I don't care about looks at the moment. Just want a working track, even if it is all dark.

Also, I put B3DExport.py in the addons directory and restarted blender before starting on the track before and followed the instructions in http://supertuxkart.sourceforge.net/Ins ... he_tools_2 to install the scripts but it did not work and yes I went back and did again but was setup, so I don't know why it is complaining. Using OS X 10.7.5 blender 2.6.8.

Is there something I missed?

Bonus points if you can walk me through extruding a flat object (imported from svg) so that stk sees it as a solid object. I tried to follow a video on youtube but didn't have same options available/didn't work for me.

It's a good idea to setup a small track that works

The easiest way to do that is to download a track (they are in the media repository) remove all objects and add your own objects.
I don't need to be fully taught in blender

You definitely need to follow a tutorial about the basics of blender (you can find many on YouTube). Practice a bit before trying to make a track.

I will answer to your questions once you have followed this tutorial http://vimeo.com/m/24853049 and posted here your result :). But probably you will find yourself answers (thrust me this tutorial is really good and interesting for stk).

In our wiki you can find ressources about track making but please forgot the idea to convert a track from svg. It's too complex and time consuming.
