Icon for the addon loading dialog

Icon for the addon loading dialog

Postby xenux » 24 Jun 2013, 02:08

I open this topic to create new icons for the addon loading dialog to make it looks cuter.

First, the new star rating system need a relooking. Here is the image:
Image

Then, we need icons for these properties of a addon:
  1. Alpha
  2. Beta
  3. RC
  4. bad-texture
  5. non-DFSG
  6. featured

Thanks in advance to the artists!!!

Ludsky have you read the first post ?

En français ça donne:
Avant-tout les étoiles ont besoin d'un relooking.

Donc oui on cherche une nouvelle icone ;)

Hello xenus!

I tried to do something :)

Have look to this. Say me what do you think of it :
New icons addons 01.png

New icons addons 02.png

The size of the square icon is 180x180 (It's the original size of the button of the menu). And the size of DFSG icons is 328x180. I think it's too large. :D
We can reduce the size. Which size do you want for these icons?

Here is a compressed folder with the PNGs.

@rubberduck
Yes these icons are too big, but in fact I don't know what is the proper size for these icons.

@ludsky
We can maybe create a progress bar for the development of the Karts. That depends of the developers. What do they prefer? an alpha, beta, RC.. icon or a progress wheel like your. But we have to keep in mind that a Kart in Alpha, Beta release is functional, and testable. Moreover on the STK addons site only the Karts who are usable and almost finished can be published. So the progress wheel must mean alpha, beta, RC and not the progress of the modelling or texturing of the kart in Blender. :)

@xenus
Are the icons you want for the addons site, for the in-game addons menu or for the both? And what is optimal size for this use? (I think I can easily reduce them)
What do you prefer? alpha icon... or a progress bar/wheel for the development of the Karts? Or the both :)
Thank you for your answers.

Alpha/beta could also just be left as text; other items like rating are more important to show as icons

Hum... yes... my answer was indeed a bit too complicated and serious for the subject :D

I haven't thought about the text possibility...it would be easier... :?
So tell me which icons you keep, and the size you want for these icons :)

Hi!

As I really like them (GOOD JOB! :) :) :) ), you should take care about the shadow around your icons, while the one you have is too "fat". I had the same problem here: viewtopic.php?f=18&t=4541&start=25

here's a corrected xcf file with the "good" border.

Maybe for the DFSG compliant icon you could put something like this:
DF
SG

tav'

Hello,

@Ludsky
The stars are for the rating, vote or just display. :)

@S@f
First, I think it's better than icons don't look too close to buttons. They won't be clicked, they will just display informations. Could you retry with a black border and a other background image?

Then, I think we can try to be a little more imaginative. He have some ideas, but no time before the week-end. I don't care if someone stole it ;).

Alpha, Beta => Use wooden plank or some construction equipment to make background.
RC => A graduate cap, maybe mark with letters RC.
Featured => If we use heart in the list, we can also use heart for this icon.
Bad/Good texture => A kart is good, but some add-ons aren't for kart. I don't know if it's a good choice.
DFSG => I have thought to use a gnou as for gnu, but I'm not sure it fit the definition.

Otherwise, the stars is good, but I need it bigger. Add-on loading have a lot of empty space. So, could you make the image fit the size of 128x256 or 128x512? :)

Currently, it's a idea of Auria to add icons on add-on loading screen. I don't know if we can use it for the website.

Hi!

Xenux, you are right about the button style. It wasn't a good idea.

Now the stars fit the size 128x512.
AddonIcon_Stars_128x512.png

So thanks for your advices, I made a new set of icons :
I kept the idea of construction materials for the alpha, beta and RC.
For featured I reused the heart shape from the list.
For the Bad/Good texture I took a screenshot in-game, so we can see Karts and Track :)
AddonIcon_Set2.png

For DFSG I have nothing... :o
I don't know if we can use a Gnou... because DFSG means Debian Free... Is there a symbol for DFSG like for :gpl: ?
If someone have an idea, please tell us :)

EDIT : Maybe a stamp like this one I made. (The effect isn't very good)

Thanks for the stars, I am adding them to SVN!

For the others, I really appreciate your attempts, but your icons are really huge. In-game, we need icons that will be displayed at perhaps 32x32 on an average resolution (they can be 64x64 for higher resolutions)

Thank you Auria! Now I have the proper size for these icons :)

So I made a new set of icons, but due to the small size I preferred to make colored icons rather than textured icons :)
What do you think of it?

I think the heart icon should have a different background colour to make it stand out more; currently you kinda have to concentrate to see what the shape of the bottom half is. Maybe just a different shade of red would do it, or a completely different colour.
Hey pal, I took an oath for justice! "In happy days or tightest tights..." or something like that.
