The idea of the book is really good but it should be more "heavy", "dense" (and closed ?) like this:

Ok. I'll try to make a closed book, and open it on focus. I'll male it more heavy too.

Again (I asked it once but no answer yet), does the game support animated gif or png? It could be great to see an animated book open on focus :-)
If not, maybe make a small suit of png.

In the future it could be fantastic to see the three other icons move too :) :) (Dreaming...)

Edit: What do you mean by "be careful"? Is it the small crop on the highest line on the right? I didn't noticed it when I posted, and it is invisible ingame. But now you said it, I'll correct this :)

No, it does not support animated gifs. The effect could be simulated thought, but I am not sure of the performance impact of that (e.g. for me loading and scrolling the track selection window is always slow). Before anyone asks this question: yes, irrlicht has texture animators, which can automatically switch a texture every X milliseconds, but that only works for scene nodes, not gui elements.

Thanks for your quick reply :)
I'll see later how to make aneventual animation. For now I can give you this small and thin book:

Image
Image

It's 1:15. Who said I cannot sleep while giving contributions?

Nota: It's all my work. I looked at work from others bu did all alone :) ! Maybe I can sometimes become graphist after all ;)
Edit: public domain or any other licence you want :zero:

Re-edit: Let'sopen this book: (Ok, I've seen the missing yellow corner on the closed one :D To be corrected soon.

Image

Then look at this book: what you can see is the story: Nolok, then gnu in jail, then tuk karting etc...

A nice idea is to have the gray closed book shown standard and onMouseOver()* the opened book. The change will make it look as if the book has been opened for you.

Re: Story mode icon

it is exactly what I am working on :)

There are two files in the gui folder, so you can just find them and change them to see. their names are respectively menu_story.png and menu_story_focus.png

Closed book:
Image
ingame:
Image

Now it's done, I give the XCF file I used to do this. In it you can find the old trys and the current book, a grayscale and a coloured background, so it's easy to tick the things you want to see and make any combination you want.

@ hiker: About performance impact, I'm surprised, while my APU makes fine the job for changing smoothly the images in the grand prix selector. But, anyway, it's not exactly for today
Maybe tomorrow :). Do you use nvidia material? (I remember small performance issues on my big playing station, now you say it, and it had nvidia-based GPU. But... the playing station died some days ago (I mean: no beep, no stating, no video output... but it had an old gamer material (Asus commando, Core2Duo,...)

Edit: A big issue tu put in the first priority (or not) : Now on starting the focus should be on single player mode and not on story mode to see the book opening. Other way to go: don't focus anything at all at the starting if the mouse is not on a button. ;)
Or focus on a "virtual" button out of the screen that you could not see and select with arrows.

Very good ! i love the closed one :D
Not sure about the animation (open -> close) because there is no animation with other icon but it could be a good idea.

I have just one suggestion: just make your book more "large" (i don't know it in english) and reduce the size a little bit (and one of the two version has to be in black and white) and also it has to be in the center of the icon, not the right side

Good but,
Just reduce the size a bit now  and that will be ok, and put it at the center of the icon, something like this

Nice
This is almost perfect in my opinion, Just move it a little to the right and that will rocks (to be perfectly centered) IMHO
I know this is just a very very little detail sorry for that :)

I centered it with the "center" option in GIMP.

Anyway, I pushed it a bit on the right. I can't see the difference.

Edit: Just another idea:
You didn't start to play story mode; the book is closed.
You are currently playing but did NOT finish Nolok's castle; Opened Book.
You have finished the game: the book is closed on the other face (I made it but did not post it), where there is a "surprise" image, like tux on the podium (currently what I have).

The only bad thing is that the nice closed book is very shortly used.

Me too :-)

BUT: It doesn't exactly fit with the other icons (black outline). Maybe by improving quality of all other icons? :)

Maybe I misunderstood: with animation, were you meaning two different texture, one when focused (book open), one when not focused (closed)? That would be a lot easier than showing a sequence of textures, and also have less memory/performance impact.

Re: Story mode icon

Postby tavariz91 » 18 Apr 2013, 17:37

I was meaning both of them.
Firstly, to make a "2 frames animation", I mean when you focus, the book is opened. When you don't focus, the book is closed. You can use the "animated" section in my post for this (replace /data/gui/menu_story.png and menu_story_focus.png . The memory / performance impact is negligible while these two pictures are already in the game but with the podium.

Image
Image

But, later, it could be a huge improvement to see the book smoothly open or close (and other items move too!). I was thinking about animated png / gif, but it could be a 3d animated book too ;) (I don't know blender, but maybe someone could.)

Anyway, for now there is an unanimated book, while I'm not sure that the "2 frames anim" is really something good.
The book's positions are different while for the animated one I put it "ready to be opened".

So, I think that you should try the animated and the unanimated ones, and use the one you prefer as a commit.

Hi,

I think the book opening/closing is a bit too elaborate, I'd like to keep it simple. Otherwise, I like the idea of a book, but the current proposed book is not consistent with other icons. Our other icons use thick outlines with little fine details. I think the story mode icon should look like the others

@tav' : if the outline is bigger, you should reduce to book size
