Renaming Nolok

Renaming Nolok

Postby antoine » 09 Jan 2013, 06:54

It would be funny if Nolok was renamed Patrick Taunts. Then one of the other characters could call him "Pat Taunts" i.e. Patents, which would make him really angry. I understand that this play on words probably only works for the English language.

Wilber: "We've got to defeat Pat Taunts"
Patrick: "My name is Patrick, with a Rick."
Wilber: "I didn't mean to get you so upset, Pat."
Patrick: "P A T R I C K. This is libel. I should... sue you!"
Suzanne: "Relax Pat Taunts"
Patrick: "ALL OF YOU!!!"

it's funny, but Nolok has been Tux's enemy forever, so I don't think that that is something we should change.

Antoine, don't spam Contributions with silly suggestions. This was ill thought out at best and a time waster at worst; it detracts from all the other work people are doing. Nolok is not a new character for STK and your suggestion was absurd and not even the play on words you declared it to be. (Taunt is pronounced T-aw-nt, Patent pronounced Pay-tent, so it sounds nothing allike.)

I'm locking this. I really should delete it TBH.

[LOCKED] Changing Nolok's name

Postby antoine » 10 Jan 2013, 00:59

Hey Charlie,

I don't understand why you locked the thread. Ideas should go into general, but it could have been moved. I think you're out of your depth here.

First off, maybe it is not a "play on words" but it is using words playfully. It's a common source of humor in English speaking countries http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index ... 802AAibJ0G. Haven't you ever seen the Simpsons? Bart has a recurring gag where he calls Moe's Tavern and asks for people with "playfully worded names". Example; Amanda Hugandkiss (Moe then tells the bar, "I need Amanda Hugandkiss" ie "I need a man to hug and kiss.")

Secondly, Nolok is inspired by the Koopalings from the Mario series. http://www.mariowiki.com/images/thumb/3 ... Bros_U.png There father's name is "Bowser, King Koopa" and is a common source of humor for Mario fans because "Bowser" and "King Koopa" are used interchangeably in U.S. releases. http://www.collegehumor.com/article/569 ... mes-bowser
This leads to harmless confusion on whether or not they are the same character.

Bowser's name actually depends on specific countries and game titles. In some countries and game titles he's "King Koopa" or "Demon King of the Koopas" and in recent U.S. games he's usually just "Bowser". In fact, Koopa comes from playing with the name of a traditional Korean food. Another example of "playful" word use and STK would be paying homage to its source material. http://www.mariowiki.com/King_Koopa#Nam ... _Languages

Princess Peach had a similar name change. Two names for one character? Happens all the time http://harrypotter.wikia.com/wiki/Tom_Riddle and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Darth_Vader. Who is to say that the events of SuperTuxKart don't come before SuperTux? That, Patrick Taunts doesn't get so infuriated that he takes the monicker Nolok.

I think it makes Nolok more playful and a sort of comic foil. Nolok menacingly saying he's the going to eat the hippy GNU is a little dark, isn't it? And that's the point right, to make a game that's fun for all ages?

The biggest problem is that the joke wouldn't translate to other languages.

It's fine you think it's unfunny. I think you were rash to lock the thread for the reasons you gave.

Out of my depth / rash. Anything else?

I'll let qubodup sort it out, since in my opinion, you are now trolling.

It was a whimsical notion presented without any thought or research in a place that it didn't belong. Now you're directly attempting to insert Mario influence into a game that, karts and platform play aside, attempts to keep a long distance from the Mario universe.

Then you attempt to compare your completely bogus play on words to the jokes in the Simpsons as some kind of validation? Jesus Christ. Your play on words SOUNDED NOTHING LIKE what it was intended to. The whole point of the Bart-gets-Moe-to-say jokes is that Bart presents words that actually sound like something stupid when put together by Moe. There is no way to say Pat Taunt in a way that sounds like patent. It was stupid, silly, and wrong, and asdf.asdf.asdf.

To self: don't argue with a fool - they bring you down to their level where they are more experienced... *shakes head*

The community is not a place for you to present brain farts. They will get wafted away if you do so.

Oh, and just to try to make you realise how annoying you are being, you've not even asked the developers or presented a good idea.

Just, "It'd be funny if... hur hur." Honestly, it is like you are 12 years old!

Relax. Opinion is subjective as to whether "taunt" and "tent" sound more dissimilar than "Amanda" and "a man to". That's not an objective matter. I felt your initial response was extremely deriding and so I backed up my thoughts with examples and explanations. Now you are calling me names backhandedly. Feel free to delete both threads.

But c'mon, far away Nolok is not.

Antoine, sorry, we have no intent to change Nolok's name. We are not really looking for pun names.

And please Charlie, keep calm. I think my one-line reply just above was clear yet calm, and shorter to type ;)

It was not deriding, it was matter of fact. The developers are busy enough without having to filter the forum content as another task on their list, so don't post trash.

Hello,

I merged and unlocked the thread(s), as such action would have to be a STK moderator decision. Auria of STK replied to the topic by now.

Global moderators should to talk to project moderators before taking action. We (global/project moderators) have now talked in private about this.

Thanks for not freaking out everybody. ;)

Cheers

I would suggest if antoine wishes to begin renaming characters and rewriting the STK story, that he does it in a more polite, serious manner.

Immature presented and badly constructed name puns are not a suitable suggestion IMHO.

Oh, and calling a forum admin rash and out of his depth is pretty ill advised too. I might be rash, but I'm not out of my depth.
