Share your trial times (STK 0.8)

I found an interesting software to record a screencast of Supetuxkart.
It's called "screencastor", it's a GUI for the in-line command ffmpeg.
I found it on the french ubuntu forum : http://forum.ubuntu-fr.org/viewtopic.php?id=440555&p=1.
The frame rate nearly don't drop when you play (with my configuration) and you can tweak the parameter to record a fluid video.
Here is the one I record on Oliver's.
(It's a lucky one shot, because I not yet able to get such a good run and time at the first try anytime ;) )

[Edit]
Here is two more video, one is for bonnifarz who is still wondering about my time in Scottland (I hope it will help you to improve yours :) ) , and the other one is for my own pleasure since The Old Mine is one of my favorite tracks (lots of passages difficult to handle at high speed in which I've worked a lot for obtaining a smooth and high speed path)

Minigolf :
Time : 01:08:96
Shortcut : 2 per lap
Skidding : 0, I'm absolutely unable to use it

I was a little bit surprised about the zippers at the start in trial mode. ^^
I didn't make all very good so it's probably not to hard to do better.

Thanks for those wonderful videos, Ancalagon.
I have updated the boards accordingly and added the corresponding links, including the fastest times and number of skids shown in your recordings.
It is indeed interesting to see you drive, as you proof that smooth curves are more important than collecting all nitros. Also, it is by far the better proof of your skill than a screenshot could ever be.

Alayan, this is remarkable contribution. I will have to check carefully for other shortcuts there, as the one I have in mind is quite difficult and does not permit such a fast time without skidding. Thanks for this.

I run it a few times more to don't make the mistakes I have done with my previous time, I made 01:06:16 ; always with these same shortcut and without skidding speed boost. ^.^
There is still a way to be faster, I think under 01:05:00 is a good aim.

And at the moment I juste looked the Oliver's video, it looks good. I'll see the others after trying to do times myself.

EDIT : 01:04:51 on the Minigolf, and still some mistakes. I take a look on the Mine now.

EDIT2 : Mine, without skidding, 01:24:55. I'm a little bit sceptical about the 01:17 time since I was at 300 most of time with nitro and take not so bad curves comparing to the video. 7 second, it seems to be a lot. :|

It's true that smooth curves are more important than collecting nitro, however in my video of Old Mine I think I lost 1 or 2 seconds on the first lap because I was not able to take all the nitro I can on the first part of the tracks (if you look carefully, between the first and second lap I was able to take more nitro in the second one, and so getting faster).

In response to Alayan, I think STK permits to go faster than 300 but the speedometer is not able to show more. For exemple when you use the zipper boost, you get much faster than with full nitro during a few seconds, but the speedometer does not show any difference between the two.
That why relying only on speedometer is not totally relevant since you can go faster than the speed limit indcated by the counter.
The skidding feature provide you accelaration boost which, when coupled with nitro, permit you to overcome this limit. I think that's the reason for this 7 seconds difference.

I was thinking about something similar of not necesseraly the same speed when the counter indicate 300, as when we go on some texture which boost on some tracks, we feel we go faster as when we are at full speed with nitro. It must explain this difference yup.

I see that there is actually nothing in this subject about tracks in reverse, but it may be intersting. I have a 01:06:63 on reverse Minigolf with a pretty funny shortcut and something else which may be a bug.

Personally, I find the minimal race gui much more convenient (look for it in the config.xml), so I have not seen the speed indicator for quite a time now - an option to show a numeric value for the speed would be sweet, though. Back to the speedometer, the scale seems to be multiplied by a factor of ten.
  • 23 m/s is the regular top speed on flat ground,
  • nitro adds up to 5 m/s,
  • a zipper adds 4.5 m/s and
  • skidding addds 4.5 (to 6.5) m/s,
but I guess the latter is for long skidding only, where the color of the boost changes to green. So it seems a fair assumption that the top speed on flat ground is about 37 m/s, but things could be more complicated than that.

I think the inclusion of all official tracks in this thread makes the list already quite lengthy, and some tracks are not really designed for reverse mode, so I have no plans for including that. Of course, you can still post any times you like. On the other hand, you may want to request add-on tracks that were part of earlier releases or are possible candidates for future releases. Let's see, if some track will get very popular here, there's still place for five preview pictures in the first post ;)

Hello :) I would like to contribute my trial time:

Track: Scotland
Time : 01:19:00
Shortcut : 0 per lap
Skidding : ~21 (11 on 1st lap, 10 on second, cant tell for sure though its hard to keep count)
Kart: Emule

I still keep missing some nitros, so its not really great ...

Thanks, krash... I am glad people contribute times not only if it grants them a first rank.
I updated the board for Scotland after catching up with Ancalagon for the very first time. I think my main problem was that i never really used the zippers for a triple boost (i.e. use them only during a skidding boost with nitro).

Christmas' update for some of my times ;)

-Around the lighthouse
00:36:56 2 shortcuts (one by lap) ~12-13 skids
-Fort Magma
01:12:86 ~28-30 skids
-Zen Garden
00:23:58 2 (very big) shortcuts ~8-10 skids
-XR591
01:20:17 4 shortcuts
-Snowpeak
01:05:25
-Subsea
02:26:70
-Star Track :!:
01:24:19
-Scottland
01:14:81 ~31-32 skids
-Northern Resort
01:11:85
-Amazonian Journey
01:15:53
-Blackhill Mansion :!:
01:05:03
-Hacienda
01:14:03

:!: : I've not drive a lot on those tracks so the times should not be as sharp as they can be on other tracks. But I think the Star Track lacks too much difficulty for permitting any major improvement of the time.

Thanks for these, Ancalagon...
I'll update that later. Funny to see how close our new times for Scotland are :D
And it seems you found the shortcuts on XR591, too.

Yes, I found the shortcut I was lacking to catch up to your time on XR591.
However I'm still totally unable to get the shortcut you and Alayan take on Mini-Golf...

Here a tip for bonnifarz (and the others players of course), if you want to get faster on Scottland I've found 2 ways:
-the first is to drive the shortest path possible, i.e stick to the edge on turns to reduce the distance you do.
-the second one is to use the speed boost at the moment the zipper effect fade (a little before the last line of nitro before the end line). It enable you to run the whole end of the track at a very high pace, and I think it is one of the most efficient way to use the speed boost. (But I will soon try your triple boost to compare)
[Edit]: Indeed, the triple boost is a pretty awesome feature, I already love it. Thanks for this Christmas gift ;)

Thanks to that I'm sometimes able to run the first lap under 37s and the whole track in less than 1:14 (New personnal best at 01:12:51 ;) )

All leading posts were updated accordingly.

Concerning minigolf, I really don't know what Alayan did there, but here are descriptions for my shortcuts.
1) leap over the tunnel, landing somewhere near the bridge, this one should be easy
2) cut the turn over the sand bank, this one is so obvious that you may not have counted it
3) before the double sharp turn, you can jump directly to the windmill, but this will take some speed. I always mess it up in some way ;)

I think you've overlooked those times and did not add them to the board Bonnifarz.

About my Minigolf time : I don't use your first shortcut, which I find is not effective (I always take the 3 nitro), but I use the two others (love the second, even if it is really hard to don't lose your speed).
I don't understand why you don't do better times... Even if I wasn't able to reproduce my time (I am racing on this track for 45 minutes), I made 01:06:22 and was able to be often under the 01:10. (But when I do to big mistake I restart, so I go to the end quite rarely.

I found another shortcut, extremely hard to use, but really worth. I made a 01:03:74 time, with a 0:30:24 time at the first lap (yes, it means that they were important mistakes at the second, and though I beat my previous time)

You can note 01:58:39 for me in Green Valley, without shortcut but with around 12 skids. It's absoluteley not a competitive time (I even didn't searched the shortcuts that probably exists), I made it after a few try and with a lot of mistakes, but I tried to learn skidding with this. ^^

Boards updated.
Alayan {l Wrote}:About my Minigolf time [...]

bonifarz {l Wrote}: I always mess it up in some way ;)

Honestly, that's why, I have not spent much time trying, and that third shortcut is tough to execute perfectly, at least for me.
Alayan {l Wrote}:I found another shortcut, extremely hard to use, but really worth.

So we collect some interesting infos here, thanks. That will keep some people busy and entertained looking for that other hard-to-use shortcut there.

Arthur {l Wrote}:I really like that you're having fun with this; keep it up! :)

Yeah, same here. I am glad to see that this topic triggered so many contributions of good quality. I conclude it was well worth the time to put things together and open this thread. Some of the information here is probably useful for testing as well (shortcuts, balancing of times for challenges).

Have fun and happy racing

A few new times :
-Around the Lightouse : 0:36:43 ; Skids : 2 ; Shortcuts : 3
-Green Valley (because my previous time was too bad) : 01:39:31 ; Skids : 8 ; Shortcuts : 4
-Snow Peak : 01:14:39 ; Skids : around 10 (4 or 5 per lap) ; Shortcut : 0 (Because of check lines, but it would be good to avoid totally some shortcuts) (Ancalgon, you found a shortcut here or what ? :D)
All can be notably improved. ^^

-Minigolf : Always the same 4 shortcuts (including the new one) ; Always no skid ; And a time you'll never trust. Without any sort of cheating : 00:57:70 I don't understand how I make it (I mean, it was at the 3rd or 4th try, with nearly no error. Usually I run during 30 minutes to have a little better result on this track. Even if it is still possible to beat it, it will be hard)

I noticed that in lot of tracks, when you go in water, it's just totally buggy. When trying to find shortcuts you notice a lot of bugs.
An exemple on green valley :

startrack: 2:00 no shortcuts :p
Zen Garden: 0:34 2 shortcuts

I am getting better at skidding, but darn, still not as good as most of you ;)

P.S. bonifarz, you misspelled your name in the zen Garden box

It seems it's time for me to update some of my times ;)

-Bovine Barnyard
00:48:66 2 shortcuts
-Green Valley
01:37:25 no shortcuts (I've not drive a lot on this tracks, there is still room for improvement)
-Around the lighthouse
00:35:25 (I take one big shortcut by lap, but i don't know whether it should count as one or two shorctuts each time. I will try to video record it for you to judge.)
- Scottland
01:11:46 no shortcuts.
-Mini golf
01:00:91 6 shortcuts (once you get it, it's much easier to improve your time :) )

And Alayan I've not search nor found any shortcuts on Snow Peak ;)

Done.
Ancalagon {l Wrote}:Around the lighthouse [...] i don't know whether it should count as one or two shorctuts each time.

I always counted that as one shortcut, as you basically drive a straight line from the nitros at the cliffs to the finish line. Another potential shortcut may be to jump over the pond, but that did not look quite useful to me.
