Why don't you try to learn how to use blender and gimp BEFORE making contribution ?

Harsh. He's learning. Give him constructive advice i.e. what process should he use to create the texture.

Thank you. I think the last time I use blender, it was in 2006 (or 2007) :? i was just able to create a basic dining room

Howdy,

Just some answers to your queries, opposition to your crits and pleas for a 7th (is that right?) second chance.

The pattern is right, just rotated 90 degrees. Maybe It's not tight enough. I'll keep it for now and see how it goes but I may change it later if you/I think it needs it.

Yes I can change the colour. I'll upload a new version with new effects (and no dots) soon. Since we have this new icon I'll try to make the texture look like it.

Samuncle: I know, I know. I admit I'm not the best and that I've had only 66.6 percent of the year to learn (in days; who knows how much I work on it) but I know how to use it. Though I don't know all the tricks or even some of them I might (potentially) be able to make one that could work.

Charlie: Thanks but don't get any hopes up. I've disappointed a lot.

Howdy everyone,

Here, it takes out the dots and the colour and adds in a new one and some noise. It looks (I think) like the icon except maybe for the lines. Again I'll give source (GIMP xcf) so that anyone can easily edit it.

If there are ANY crits please tell me what the problem is EXACTLY instead of saying "doesn't fit STK, please learn GIMP".

Just a note to Totoplus. If you don't wish to render you can also just press P and take a shot.

Thanks,
Hero

I think the problem is you are doing things the wrong way. You're painting a 2D image then hoping it works out OK.

Look how the texture stretches, pixelates the thinner lines.

Also it could be that the approach you're using is different to that in STK - there are multiple ways to texture a sphere.

So:
- step 1: identify how it is done in STK; look at the bouncy ball model
- step 2: establish whether you're just going to create a new texture, or a new model entirely
- step 3: follow a tutorial to do it well

For example: Blender 2.6 Tennis Ball Tutorial

Okay, I'll try to get the wrap to work.

Just wondering: how's the texture other then the wrapping problems? Good? Bad? Terrible?

I'm back to work. Thanks.

As a 2D texture it doesn't look too bad at all, although TBH I preferred the dimpled version. However, a texture that looks beautiful in 2D but wrong in 3D is a bad texture, hence samuncle's grumpy reply.

Here we are. It gets the line thickness to match the face location on the sphere.

I hope this does what we need. As far as I can see it fixes line thickness.

It doesn't look like a basketball though, does it? It is also too low resolution (see teh giant pixels) and/or wrapped incorrectly. There are different ways to apply a texture to a sphere (see my previous post) and different ways to create a sphere. You need to choose a more appropriate one.

The thing is I can't change the way it's applied. I'm not completely remodelling the thing I don't have any source. Let's see if I can get a shot in the game though.

Okay. Sorry for refresh and things like that but:

Screenshot-Untitled Window.png

It turns out the mega-pixel problem is a feature of Blender to take our rough edges. I don't know if it can be disabled but it's not there in the game. The pixels and noise are just right.

As to whether it looks like a basket ball (or maybe like Totopluses) I'd say Kind'a. After all I shouldn't be passing my own work except to here. I'll try to get a closer shot ASAP.

Tell me what to do next. I await (and fear) your orders.

Sources are always available in SVN.

Here are the models:
http://supertuxkart.svn.sourceforge.net ... ta/models/

The Blender model is rubber-ball.b3d and ball.jpg is the texture.

I found this out reading the powerups.xml file. It is an open source game; sources are always available, you just have to dig a little.

Now, as far as the texture, you still don't seem to understand; the path of the lines are nothing like that on a basketball.

Did you see the texture I linked to before? Nevermind, I'll include it here, as the original 300x150 and also resized to 256x256. I don't know what the texture requirements are for STK (power of 2 as a square or is a power of 2 rectangle OK?) but if you can use this as guideline (do not edit it, you must start from scratch as it is not an open source texture).

Thank you.

From what you've given me I should be able to do it. Just a note. It's generally 512 x 512 but in this case for an odd reason it's 256.

.b3d (Blitz 3D) is not the Blender format. Blender uses .blend. Also with the STK stuff we can only write .b3d, not read them. So though that is what STK reads I can't use it. And I already know about that stuff there.

Thanks for the texture, I'm off to work.

Note: No SPALDING in the end, is that fine? It's trade mark and I'm not into product placement. :D

Like this. (I kinda cheated! Traced over a portion of the above texture with the path tool then replicated that - the texture is essentially 4 identical panels flipped LRLR, and is also mirrored vertically.)

Right; hence I said you need to start from scratch as opposed to modifying a copyrighted image. The basketball pattern itself is not trademarked, but the image is under copyright.

Nice but it doesn't wrap on the sphere like Totoplus's icon. I'm fixing this right now.

I was joking about SPALDING. Of course if you want I could add SuperTuxKart there and make it look like the SPALDING thing.

I'm not sure what you're doing wrong. Do you honestly think that looks good? (Seriously.)

This is my texture mapped to a sphere in GIMP (sorry, no Blender skills)... this is what yours should look like.

In theory yes. I think maybe there's a difference in Blender or I'm looking at it the wrong way... literally.

I'll see what yours looks like in Blender AND STK but I already tried it your way and it didn't work... unless we're trying to go for two different things.

EDIT: Solved It! Your texture is correct, just it's supposed to go on the end. Unfortunatly as I'm not edit my wrap I can't see that part properly. I think yours might work in the game but I can't be sure.

This is a nice texture Charlie ! This is just what we need! I don't understand why this is possible to do it with gimp and not with blender :o . Maybe someone (that know blender) can take charlie's texture and use it with gimp. (If charlie's texture is trademarked I can re-create it from scratch this week end ;) when i will be back at home)

To Hero:You have all the time to learn :) !
I don't think the text on the ball is a good idea

Getting better. However, what techniques do you use to draw the lines? Why are they so jagged/blurred?

....grabs .xcf and investigates...

OOOOHhhhhhhhhh.....................

It is because you are exporting as a jpeg. No no no no no! NO!

JPEG is a lossy format. I'm not sure what level of compression you are using, but it is making your texture look considerably worse.

Use .png instead and it will look a lot better.

OK. Last step. As Binky says, these need to be higher res i.e. 512x512. So, that'll then be something of adequate quality for consideration. (And we haven't even gotten the OK from the developers yet, so this all may be just an educational exercise!)

If you don't feel up to it, I'll do it I guess.
