Kart will not drive

Kart will not drive

Postby 4nthony » 29 Oct 2012, 13:51

Hi

I can not make the kart go. I have tried different key options but it just rolls along slowly and I get lapped before I reach the first bend.

I am running ubuntu 12.04 on a hp envy 14 with a norwegian keyboard.

Can anyone help me? I have tried searching the net and this forum, but cannot find a similar issue. If you need any more info., please ask.

Thanks in advance.

:)

What keys do you press?
Have you checked your keyboard settings?
Do any keys work? (ESC?)
Does it work if you switch to US keyboard? (`setxkbmap us` in the command line might do this)

Are you using the correct player for the device? Please check.

Norwegian keyboard user here as well. Never had any problems with that, so it's more likely something else, but nevertheless it would be good to rule it out as a possible problem facilitator.

Hi, thanks for all the replies.

>What keys do you press?

I have tried the default (up, down, left, right), and wasd

>Have you checked your keyboard settings?

I have tried changing the default settings in stk, yes, and have now changed my keyboard setup to us. This didn't help.

>Do any keys work? (ESC?)

ESC works and left and right seem to work a bit, maybe you need a certain degree of speed for the wheels to turn. Accelerate and brake (reverse) do not do anything. Fire (default space) does, but it takes me 5 minutes to collect something! :)

>Does it work if you switch to US keyboard? (`setxkbmap us` in the command line might do this)
this did not help unfortunately

>Are you using the correct player for the device? Please check.

I have tried with the default user (me logged in) and as Guest, neither work.

Thanks again for all the suggestions, any other ideas?

I spose you could try to change your key settings to something completely different like using the W A S D keys or the mouse buttons or something.....

hi

I have tried WASD already and it did not seem to help.

I have now treid enter too (mouse not possible) and this did not help, but I did notice acouple of other things.

1) The monkey character's car is not corrctly displayed, the picture is just a confused mess. The other charcters seem to be ok.
2) I got penalty time, which suggests that the buttons are sending an on-off signal all the time, whether they are pushed or not.

Thanks for the suggestion.

1. is known and is an issue with the Debian/Ubuntu package (well more specifically the version of the Irrlicht library they're using). The static binary on the website does not have this issue.

2. Yes that sounds like a possible explanation. Which doesn't make all that much sense since keyboards should generally behave the same, but alas it seems like there's a bug somewhere.

maybe you should try the nightly build and see if anything is different? viewtopic.php?f=17&t=3389

Which track are you running?

If the TRACK part is obvious stay on it. You may be encountering "terrain slow down".

I remember this problem the first time we used 0.7.3. On the second round of playing it worked perfectly.

Add another device (keyboard) and set it to WASD. Make sure the old one uses the cursor buttons. Then try out both simultaneously.

One more idea. Wait about a minute before you start driving and see if it goes better.

the same problem exists on all tracks.

I do not have a second keyboard, only the one on the laptop.

Waiting a minute does not help.

I should mention that 0.7 (the version standard with ubuntu 12.04) works fine. 0.7.3 has this problem.

Where can I find step-by-step instructions for installing the nightly build? I don't mind using the terminal, but things do need to be spelt out for me a bit.

Thanks!

Troubleshooting.

1. Can you steer/fire/use nitro or anything?

If 1 is yes: Certain key combinations will not work, because keyboards can only process so many keystrokes at once. EXAMPLE: You cannot use Space, Up and Left at the same time.

If 1 is no: Do you have any other game controllers (joysticks, steering wheels, etc.) connected to your computer? Sometimes they can interfere with the keyboard on games.

Hope this helps.

You don't need two keyboards. My brother and I play multiplayer on the same keyboard.

>1. Can you steer/fire/use nitro or anything?

As I said, steering and firing are ok, forward and back do not work.

>If 1 is yes: Certain key combinations will not work, because keyboards can only process so many keystrokes at once. EXAMPLE: You cannot use Space, Up and Left at the same time.

This is not entirely true. I am not using combinations of keys. The problem is the same when I use only one key at a time.

Thanks, I do not have anything connected apart from a LAN cable and the charger :(

Hero {l Wrote}:You don't need two keyboards. My brother and I play multiplayer on the same keyboard.

I can not find out how. Under the options for keyboard there is no way I can see to add a second player. If I click on multiplayer then I can only add one person.

I have now tried several keys and always the same result. I think that the problem is with the programme and my keyboard rather than the keys I am changing, or my settings.

Any new ideas?

One moment. Try using arrow buttons on the menus. Does it work?

To do multiplayer press the fire of player 1 then of player 2. To circling karts with a bar on top should appear. You may press the arrow buttons on each bar until the bar displays the name of the player you want them to be. Then you can use player 1's fire and arrow buttons to select a kart and player 2' fire and arrow buttons to select a kart.

In the options for PLAYERS add a New Player. In the options for CONTROLS add a New Device. This new device will be keyboard.

I can't give a completely satisfactory answer as my version of STK is having some trouble with graphics. But this is what I remember from playing STK 0.7.3 for half a year. :D

Two-player is easiest with another gaming device. Using one keyboard for two players doesn't work very well because (as I said before) the keyboard can only process so many key presses at a time. Anyway, do you have another keyboard that you could hook into your computer to test?

At this point, I would suggest trying the nightly build. You are pretty much the only one having this issue so I don't know what to do, but trying the latest version is always a good first step
