Build Your Own Linux

Build Your Own Linux

Postby Undertaker » 04 Oct 2012, 01:13

Used this to create my own custom Linux build http://susestudio.com/ Gotta say, it's pretty damn neat. I don't have time to learn how to build one from scratch and modifying other builds may take time. At least you can customize certain areas and have that image created for your use.

I am planning on creating a Red Eclipse version where the game is already included, plus desktop background, etc... for a light install but great to use for gaming for those who use *nix.

This may not be useful for some but I am typing this right from my own build with my own choices in the OS so yeah, it's at least fun to do.

Here's the default desktop background I've made. Again, it will be a very basic OS with the intention of just gaming and music, etc...

Yes but that is only a game, SuseStudio actually creates a working build unless you mean for learning purposes?

I was obviously joking... but also think that the existing ready-made distros are fine ;)

Oh lol, sorry.

Well, yeah, the ready made are fine no doubt but it's nice to make your own custom version, perhaps a very light version to take around with you or just to use. Or someone can pack it to the gills with packages. :p Would be nice to have most of what I use without having to download and install everything, "which is what I did". If I get too behind on it, I just build an up to date version, done.

I will always have Fedora installed, it's been the one distro that hasn't failed me since Fed 4. Either way, it at least gives users options to make a custom distro. :)

Slax is also interesting as a distro with customizable ISO: http://www.slax.org/
The developer had an indiegogo campaign not too long ago, but was unsuccessful unfortunately: http://www.indiegogo.com/slax
I guess it's partially because not many people have a need for such a distro, but the website to create a custom ISO is really well done.
Still, he managed to get sponsored by two companies: http://www.slax.org/forum.php?action=vi ... ntID=79213 :)

Here's another, more extreme, option: http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/

I ran through the LFS book about a year ago. It's a fun, if lengthy, endeavor. There's nothing like the feeling you get when you realize the Linux system you're booting up is one that you compiled yourself, from scratch, and by hand.
