Sorry, not really into mods. I like the vanilla game the way it is. From the screenshot it doesn't look too bad though.

This could be interesting. However, at this point, this topic is too little information about fashion - and therefore almost no reviews.

As to the "dark sound" - I can advise to look towards "Open Arena" - could, would do something like them, only futuristic focus, of course, if you see fit.

The main thing, I think, to hold it all the events, in the same style (including maps).

:eew: Windows only?

You realise all the cool people use linux right? :cool:

Also, this is an open source forum, you should post the source code if you make a mod.

It's extremely bad practice to overwrite a user's configuration file, don't do that -- warning or not. Add the necessary settings to your own .cfg and explain in the instructions to add:
{l Code}: {l Select All Code}
exec "whatever.cfg"

To their autoexec.

ok will work for 1.0 a copy batch to set autoexec.cfg to "backup autoexec" and will set a new witch "ecxec backup_autoexec\autoexec.cfg" from the backup folder.
autoexec.cfg
{l Code}: {l Select All Code}
exec backup_autoexec\autoexec.cfg

backup_autoexec is a folder. Is that an alternative?

DrachenComputer {l Wrote}:Nice gui you can psot some more for Red Eclipse -Black Edition under the post :) thx for it :D

Uhm, I do not really see the context. Light customizations and additional utilities are nicely modular, while a mod project like yours seems to aim for a different style and appearance. Maybe what you want to do regarding the menus ("guis") is to substitute all colour format patterns. Just be sure the compilation of mods you add to your black edition is somewhat consistent, else it may look like just a random collection of various things. Concerning the win installer, expect people to be extremely suspicious/cautious about exe unpackers of unknown origin. Just make a zip archive with some instructions, as people are going to put modified files (maps, configs, sounds, textures etc.) in their RE user data anyways.

I'll take a look at this later, but for now I can really not tell if I support this entire idea or not.

ok but a installer is easier for normal users and this beta but if the mod in a higher version with more features it will be difficult to set up the files right, or not? I think normal user have many problems with a correct file placement.

Windows only? This is bad way....

No cross-platform - limiting the audience. Unfortunately I can not see it - I do not use "windows". It may make sense to put a cross-platform version - for example, as an archive "zip"?

Don't ever overwrite any of the autoexec.cfg, config.cfg or init.cfg files. Whatever needs to be scripted goes in separate cfg files, and the user can append lines to execute them in his autoexec.cfg. (This is getting repetitive, isn't it?)

More important: What exactly are you doing here?

Your installer may be "easy to use", but I won't do so, unless I know exactly what this thing is going to do.
Did you alter the cpp sources and compile a custom build?
If so, and as mentioned before, better provide diff files, patches or source code of what you did.
Otherwise, if it is just new/altered data content, I don't see any reason to talk about builds and cross-platform issues.

my goal is to make a mod collection and a map pack in one mod (all in One). It should be easy for normal useres to handle it (Windows user), it should be not so difficult like the other mods are thats the reason for an installer. An installer will nessesary in incoming versions with more maps textures sounds an other things because every part of the mod need an other place for placing it that will be the reason for the installer. Thats what i am doing here. :D

So if I got you right, there is no need to recompile anything or to have an installer (e.g. for pre-compiled windoze binaries).
If you think it is that difficult for windows users to place the files in the right place, why don't you write a batch script for that? (At least one can view what it does before running it.) Put everything in a zip and everyone will be able to take a look at it, regardless of the OS. However, keep in mind that a bigger file to download is not necessarily a better thing to have, especially if there are small updates.

An installer is only helpful if it comes together with an de-installer that is able to revert the RE installation to the state it was in before. Otherwise it would be more of a trap (especially for players unexperienced with the file/folder structure of RE). If that is not possible to do, you should advise people to create a second installation of RE, where your mod can mess around with. But still the content of ../my games/red eclipse needs to keep intact.

You put much work into it, and probably you would enjoy to see people using it - so make sure, nobody needs to be worried or afraight of using it.. that is what I wanna say basically :)

No. You don't overwrite user configuration files, ever. Period. Even if you back them up somewhere, no. You don't know what important things they might have, or how much work was put into it, etc. Even if you back it up and move it elsewhere, that user could rely on certain things launching every time they launch the game, and you will interrupt that by switching out their autoexec.

This goes for ANY program/mod/extension/whatever. You don't EVER overwrite user configuration files. There is no reason you should ever do this, and if you do, you will have a lot of VERY unhappy people screaming at you.

As I said before, make your own config file with all the things for your mod inside it. Then include a README file with instructions on what to do, namely telling the end user to add:
{l Code}: {l Select All Code}
exec "foo.cfg"

to their autoexec. You let them do it. That way there's no surprises, and it can be adapted to anyone's unique autoexec, and no one is unhappy. If they bork something, it's their own fault.

A script or installer, or whatever is fine to include to make sure files go in the right place, but it can't do everything, and not everyone needs their hand held. It's okay to include written instructions. Not everyone is incapable of doing the smart thing and reading the instructions.

Speaking of which, when you're adding these custom files, do NOT overwrite ANYTHING in the data/ directory!. This is NOT necessary to do, and just makes things inconvenient for the end user. Anything found in the data/ directory can be substituted by adding things to the user's RE home directory. The engine looks there first, and if it finds content, will use that instead of what's found in data/. This way, modified files can be used without touching the default files found in data/.

For example, say you have a modified scope texture. Instead of overwriting the default texture in data/textures/zoom.png, mirror that directory structure in the RE home folder.
{l Code}: {l Select All Code}
** Place it here:
Win: (My) Documents\My Games\Red Eclipse\textures\zoom.png
Lin: ~/.redeclipse/textures/zoom.png

** NOT here:
data/textures/zoom.png (will overwrite)

Please keep these things in mind.
