Skidding Idea

Skidding Idea

Postby RaceAce » 30 Sep 2012, 19:26

I just had an idea for the new skidding since some people don't like it. What about having a KERS-like system? (KERS is used on F-1 cars.) For instance: When you would start to skid, a bar comes up beside the nitro bar, and as you keep skidding, the bar fills up, maybe taking like 1.5-2 seconds of skidding to reach the top? When it reaches the top, the whole bar would turn green and once you stop skidding you could use the boost (identical to a zipper) by pressing the nitro button. If you didn't use the boost within 3 (?) seconds it would disappear and you would have to skid again to get another one. This system would let the skidding action work like the old one, but still add the new boost. What do you think?

That's actually a pretty cool idea.

I disagree. It's like the one in Mario Kart DS, it could be used for cheating on time trails when we get stats for the game.

So would the new skidding already in place. My version, the boost could be disabled on Time Trial.

How is it cheating when it's part of the core game mechanics?
Hey pal, I took an oath for justice! "In happy days or tightest tights..." or something like that.

Good point, I guess I'm still mad at always losing when it came to racing over WiFi on that game.

I like that idea with the disabled boost in time trial.

Sorry, I'm busy with other stuff (AI and skidding in STK ;) ), so I forgot to answer.

At this stage I prefer going the way we have planned - i.e. skidding bonus is used the moment you go out of a skid. This way requires a bit more skill imho (to judge when to skid and when to stop). But we will certainly listen to feedback before we release 0.8. At this stage we plan to do an alpha release as soon as we are happy with the way skidding works (and once the AI can handle it).

Cheers,

It's not necessarily a bad idea, but I think the main issue is that this requires the use of yet another key. First when playing on a keyboard if you press too many keys, keypresses get lost, and most of our users play on keyboard. Secondly well I think skidding is already a good challenge to use, making it more challenging by requiring the press of yet another key could be too much?

Actually, I thought you could just use the Nitro button for it. At worst it would use a bit of nitro, which wouldn't be bad because you're already using a boost. I really want to try the nightlies so I can test the new skidding, I'll get back to you after I try it.

I think it's a great idea. But it should be something you can enable/disable.

skidding is still being tweaked, and the last details may wait until after the first beta is released, so I can't say for sure what will be / will not be. We keep the idea open, however
