Voting System Reform

Postby Barsook » 30 Sep 2012, 17:23

I was playing today and this came to me about the voting system (and from this topic: viewtopic.php?f=72&t=3386): IT NEEDS TO BE REFORMED. This reform should be for all of the severs. After 30 days, this poll will close and depending on the results, I will post another topic about ideas for the reform (or not if it a "no").

I'm doing this because it could more organized and more easier for players to choose what map and mode they want to play.

Barsook, I'm open to ideas, but quin won't take well to anyone saying something "needs" to be done. Demanding things like that will just get people mad about it. I am confused as to what your position is on this - what kind of reform are you hoping for? A system where the server chooses? A rotatable map pool?

I was thinking about have players vote for the mode first (and mutators) then map. Or rotatable map and vote for mode or visa versa. It seems that we want to only play insta on almost the same maps or capture the flag on the same maps.

Argh, maybe you are right, this might just be a lame demand.

I don't think it is a bad idea to reason about improvements to the voting system. And some changes can be made via server settings and/or moderation, so this does not have to be a matter of coding/game features. Personally, I like a combination of voting and moderation when I run a server.

I'm not sure if this already exists (my knowledge of RE commands is a bit weak), but perhaps it should be possible to limit the vote only to the next map/mode in the rotation. There is a gonext command in Assaultcube that does this.

Yeah, but I want to be done for all of the major severs that we play on.

I think it's okay. There's no tangible solution to 10% of the maps being 90% of the time other than randomising search results (which absolutely should be done).

I think the main problem is that the game bundles far too many maps. I've always said that the least-played maps should be removed. We could probably remove 30% of the maps silently and no-one would notice if it wasn't announced. However, if it was, everyone would bitch about it. Such are the dynamics of online communities.
You just wasted 3 seconds of your life reading this.

I agree. We have too many maps, though I'm getting sick of playing on ghost and echo almost of all of the time. I think that solution is the better on than reforming the voting system, but it has too be with the ones that we truly don't want.

In current SVN, map history votelock has been implemented:
{l Code}: {l Select All Code}
// sv_maphistory 3 // remember this many maps that can't be voted again if votelock is set
