Midair Accolade

Midair Accolade

Postby fawstoar » 02 Jun 2012, 22:50

I just played a round of instagib-ballistic deathmatch, and thought that maybe a nice feature would be a little award/accolade popping up whenever you hit someone directly in midair with the rocket launcher. It could function like the "Carnage," "Double Kill," etc. awards, and give a few extra points for the kill.

Essentially a nice bonus for skill-shots with the rocket launcher. It might even encourage people to be more creative with that weapon since right now most people just shoot at the ground around someone, who knows.

Thoughts?

I'd just like to be able to get a rocket :( they are hard to find/keep, but it would be a cool idea.
Some people are like slinkies... not really good for anything, but you still can't help smiling when you shove them down the stairs.

please play Starsiege Tribes, the first one, this was done for the disc launcher, um, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Starsiege:_Tribes
play it at least once but you probably won't get as much out of it unless you give it a good thorough inspection

I like the idea to encourage shooting like that, together with a higher score, but it could get annoying in ballistic mode so maybe it shouldn't be active then. It would just be too much.

IMO the best accolade would be "Airshot", as in Xonotic, like this:

youtu.be/lAJjvVAHnEU

But RE does not have an announcer/commentator - hm

Besides, I don't think that it's a good idea anyway to even give that accolade; in Red Eclipse the rocket has such a huge blast radius that I could be in the air, jumping, and get hit by a rocket that was fired at the ground, and that person that fired would get the Airshot award for nothing. Same thing could happen if I jumped near a wall, and the person who fired that would get the bonus points too.

You can't really restrict it to anyone who gets DIRECTLY hit; people get triple-kills with the rocket because of it's blast radius and strength; the game counts it as a kill even if you didn't get directly hit. Without the rocket's blast radius and strength, it really wouldn't be that special of a weapon, would it?
In Xonotic, that award works because it is given with any weapon, and there really isn't a really devastating/one-shot weapon like that in Xonotic, so it's actually kind of special.

On the subject of accolades, may i suggest an accolade for "kill at (a really freaking huge distance) meters"? (with the rifle, of course)
It would appear in the death message as:

{blank} shot to kill [blank] at {blank} meters <- (text would be special colors or something)

My thoughts.

a DIRECT hit, not the blast from it
which would be very difficult, thus deserving of an announcement

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the computer can't really tell the difference; besides, the missile itself is so freakin' huge :)

the code should be able to tell the difference, tribes code was tiny in comparison to red eclipse
and it was able to tell the difference in a direct hit with disc or just blast from disc exploding

Yes, the code can tell between a direct hit and splash damage, otherwise projectiles that don't do splash damage would never hit anyone :P

Yes, I myself actually realized this yesterday, when I threw a grenade and it said "Headshot!" which I realized must mean that it CAN tell the difference :)
