my thoughts on the game

Postby ctdabomb » 04 May 2012, 16:58

I tried out version 1.2 and here are my thoughts on it:

I was expecting the game to be slow on my old computer, but it was not slow at all :D
it was fun even though I was pretty bad at it.
my character's arm or whatever that is, gets in the way of my view and I don't really like that.
it seems hard to shoot people(at least bots).
the game locks up whenever I configure sound.
hard to tell what the game modes were like before the map started loading and the description popped up.
I don't get the colour thing when making a profile.
message amount levels were confusing.
I can't configure turning when using keyboard. the mouse doesn't work the best.
the mouse was jerky in while in the menu.
Some people are like slinkies... not really good for anything, but you still can't help smiling when you shove them down the stairs.

I think we discussed this a while back. Mentioned something about putting a "Continue" button on the Loading Screen so that people have to accept to join the game. Because I think everyone should know what they are getting themselves into before jumping into anything. Descriptions of the mutators are pretty helpful because not all of them are straight-forward. Maybe it'll go into 1.3..?

Agreed there, with an option to disable this behaviour it would be a nice improvement to help new players.
Hats, Afros, wings and raptor feet. This game is showing progress indeed.

If you have shaders disabled then that option does nothing. With shaders on that option does this (for example their team color is RED and their personal color is BLACK):

A google video search also found this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FZYAPSU51hY
At 0:35 you can see a bot up close whose personal color is set to red. Since the match is FFA DM the team color is gray.

Downside to that video is that it shows basically no parkour: http://sourceforge.net/apps/mediawiki/r ... Game::play
Try that stuff until you can quickly run through any of the official time trial levels, and then you will have a definite mobility advantage in multiplayer.
I lost the game.

so if my color is green or white, I am that color in non team modes?

I don't get what you mean.......
and why the the player in the movie's arm different than mine? this is a hand and a gun, and I have some bulky robotic looking thing that takes up half my screen?
also, I don't really get what time trial is.....

ctdabomb {l Wrote}:so if my color is green or white, I am that color in non team modes?

yes... sorta. Your primary color is your team color. In a free for all, everyone's primary color is white.
Your secondary color is the one you choose {edited for clarity} in the menu: It is whatever color you want it to be. It shows up in all modes as color highlights on your armor.

ctdabomb {l Wrote}:I don't get what you mean.......

Maybe this will help:
Wikipedia {l Wrote}:Parkour (French pronunciation: [paʁˈkuʁ]) (abbreviated PK) is a physical discipline which focuses on efficient movement around obstacles. Developed in France by David Belle, the main purpose of the discipline is to teach participants how to move through their environment by vaulting, rolling, running, climbing, and jumping. Parkour practitioners are known as "traceurs".
Parkour's modern history began in the 1920s, though similar movements can be found in the Eastern martial arts ninjutsu and qing gong. Georges Hébert began teaching the fundamental movements related to parkour during this time period, and eventually the training became the standard for the French military. David and Raymond Belle would expand on Hébert's work, and David would eventually find the Yamakasi group, the first group dedicated to parkour.

I don't know why that would be. I have no idea.... could you post a screenshot?

ctdabomb {l Wrote}:also, I don't really get what time trial is.....

Set your game mode to time trial, then play the singleplayer maps hinder, purge, or testchamber. The goal is like a racing game time trial: Finish the course in the shortest time possible.

testchamber I couldn't get over that walls

Take another look at the wiki page for movement. I'm not at my computer right now, so I can't link to a video showing a successful run. On testchamber you run up to the wall, jump, air jump(double jump), wallkick using the 'special' key, air jump again, then repeat the last two steps until you either get over or run out of impulse. That method usually isn't the fastest way to bypass an obstacle but it's one of the most reliable. The other map I'm assuming is purge, the tron themed one. Purge has a lot of

(posting from mobile device that has short character limit)
vertical movement, and unless someone is told otherwise, they will never look up or down. I'm telling you now: look 360 degrees around you in all directions, including vertical. The first part of purge is jumping on a bunch of circle pads, the second part is falling DOWN through two layers of death stuff onto a platform (don't forget midair 'jumps' are possible), the third part is jumping onto a boost pad to go UP to a ledge... etc. etc. etc.

That looks strange... I wish I could help, but that's beyond my area of expertise. The only thing I can guess is it has something to do with the error you get on startup.

#1]Red Eclipse works just fine on my windows 7 installation.
#2]I don't think he's using any iteration of windows, look at the window borders.
#3]The only thing I can think of is maybe disabling hudguns as a temporary solution.
----In Sauerbraten it was a menu option, IDK the variable to remove hudguns in RedE
#4]This is way, waaaay, waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay outside of my area of expertise now.
----Wish I could help more but that's everything I know.
I lost the game.

Hello, Ubuntu user. Have you made sure you've installed the latest version of the proprietary drivers available for your system? In the "Settings" menu entry, there is an option to click "additional drivers". From there on, please make sure you enable the drivers available for your system.

It should be under "system"-"administration"-"additional drivers".
