Global Moderators

Global Moderators

Postby p0p3y3Z » 21 Apr 2012, 12:42

Ok, so we run our own server for 2 reasons.
1. It's the best ping server near us
2. So we can do whatever we want. Including talking how we want.
We like to use "coloured words". But we aren't racist. We like to troll who is on our servers and in our clan. It's our way of friendship and communications. So, one day one of our members named CrazedGunman was using some coloured words. Then 2 Global Moderators came in and banned him from our own server for "being racist". In every game we've ever played, we don't get banned for saying that stuff. AlterIW (if you knew them before they shut down due to a Seize and Desist letter) never cared for that stuff. None of their admins weren't allowed to say coloured words to show maturity, but they didn't stop anybody else from using it. If we run our own server, I think we should have the right to do what we want on it. Hacking/Griefing is completely different. And as one friend said "We aren't racist, but we use more racist words than a KKK member."

Problem with that kind of attitude is, someone will always take it the wrong way and a flamewar will ensue. The moderator in question was simply following the guidelines set out by the project in relation to use of the play.redeclipse.net master server. The simplest (and only) way to avoid your server being "moderated" is by not listing on our master server. Everyone is free to run "renegade" servers, and your ability to run a private server and do whatever you want is not limited at all. We simply ask that if you list on our master server, you follow some simple rules for keeping the community at large friendly and happy. If you would like to de-list from the master server, please add the following line to your servinit.cfg:

{l Code}: {l Select All Code}
servermaster ""

The guidelines being enforced are as follows:

guidelines.txt {l Wrote}:GUIDELINES FOR CONNECTING TO THE RED ECLIPSE MASTER SERVER

The Red Eclipse Team provides the play.redeclipse.net master server for the benefit of the Red Eclipse Community. We impose a general set of guidelines for any server/user which connects to the play.redeclipse.net master server. The team reserves the right to block any attempt to connect to the master server at their discretion. Access to services provided by the project are considered to be a privilege, not a right.

These guidelines are imposed to ensure the integrity of both the Red Eclipse game, and its community. If you do not agree to these terms, you should not connect to the play.redeclipse.net master server, or any servers which are connected to it. These guidelines are not designed to limit your opinion or freedoms granted to you by the open source licenses employed by the project, nor do they cover usage of the game in either offline play or on servers which are not connected to the Red Eclipse master.

If you have questions or comments regarding these guidelines please contact the Red Eclipse Team. Any person seeking to modify their game or server for use on the master server should first seek permission from the Red Eclipse Team, each modification must be approved and will be done on a case-by-case basis.

Guidelines for Servers

(See RE Mark Policy for definitions of "substantially (un)modified")

* The gameplay of the server must not grant an undue or unfair advantage to any party.
- "Humans vs Zombies" is fine, as long as it rotates roles in a fair manner.
- Giving a single player double life permanently is not permitted.

* If the gameplay of the server is modified substantially this must be indicated clearly, preferably through the use of "servermotd".

* If the source code of the server is modified substantially you must contact the Red Eclipse Team to check that the changes are permitted.

* The server must honour the auth system, allowing global bans and grant the correct access by the Red Eclipse Team, or moderators assigned by them.

* The server must not advertise or otherwise spam messages excessively.

* The server must not have a name that is offensive or send any messages that could be interpreted as offensive.
- Offensive language covers things such as bigotry (racist, religious, or sexually derogatory [gender or orientation] remarks)

* The owner of a server may outline their own rules, specific to their server.
- These rules may not revoke any part of this document.
- These rules must not make any unreasonable or illegal demands.

* Failure to follow these guidelines may result in the immediate ban and removal of the server in question from listing on the master server, without warning.

Guidelines for Users

* Players must behave in a manner that is not disruptive to the game.
- Cussing is fine, so long as it doesn't involve bigotry (racist, religious, or sexually derogatory [gender or orientation] remarks), unless a server is designated as "family friendly" and provides a clear definition of what kind of language is not permitted.
- Intentionally killing team mates or scoring for an opposing team is not permitted.
- Cheating, flooding and/or spamming is not permitted.

* The owner of a server may outline their own rules, specific to their server.
- Players on a server with additional rules must follow said rules unless the demands are unreasonable, illegal, or revoke part of this document.
- If any part of the rules supplied by a server violate this document, then all rules supplied by the server are considered to be null and void.

* Failure to adhere to a request by a moderator to follow the rules can result in an immediate ban, without warning, possibly from the master server and all Red Eclipse servers listed on it.

Guidelines for Moderators

* Moderators must act in a fair and impartial manner, employing the "warn, then kick, then ban" approach, unless there is an emergency or immediate need.

* The use of kick and/or ban should only be used when a user violates sections of this document. If in doubt, moderators should seek the advice of their peers (other players and/or moderators) before proceeding with disciplinary action. A moderator may kick and/or ban for other reasons if there is due cause to do so.

* If a moderator believes that any behaviour not covered by this document should result in disciplinary action, and they have the support of their peers, they should contact the Red Eclipse Team immediately to propose an amendment.

* Failure by a moderator to follow or uphold the rules may result in their access being immediately revoked, without warning.

I too think that if friends that are very close want to use their own language in their server, then that should be fine. IDK if i'm the only "colored" person who plays Red Eclipse, but I honestly could care less if someone called me the N-word or any variation of it. i mean its just a word and if one just so happens to be easily swayed by words, they shouldn't be on the internet. But I don't think i've read these guidelines for users so I'll probably watch my language more closely.

Just because you use the words and don't think you are racist doesn't mean its not insulting someone. The words you used were way out of line and we told you that if you didn't want to respect the master server policies that you could take the server off the master server. You were in no way using those words for "way of friendship and communications". You directed them to me in an offensive way. There was nothing mature about it. I'm not here to start a flamewar I'm just stating that you were in no way a victim. I treat everyone the same when it comes to these situations.

Just chiming in, I modified my RE shell file to keep an archive of logs that include absolutely everything that goes on for as long as I'm connected to a server, and doesn't delete any of them...so I have everything that was said in it's entirety (I just a second ago cleaned logs from January...). If need be, I can post them.

And Crazed, like we told you numerous times in game, you don't HAVE to be on the master server, and it's as simple as the line modification quin gave you. I personally could care less what you say in game, but when you're on the RE Master server, you need to follow it's guidelines, regardless of whether or not it's "your server". Myself, and all other Auth users will enforce them as well, regardless of their opinion on such words.

There's some discussion going on here if you want to voice your opinion: http://forum.freegamedev.net/viewtopic.php?f=53&t=2998

I'm just asking that when I'm running my server, your guys don't come in and start banning people for what we say. If its hacking, go right ahead. But we will use whatever language we please. And if you guys are so freaking anti racist, then get a word filter for all the servers. Banning people for using the language we do is just the same as being racist. You don't respect our beliefs. We are not racist people. We use the "N" word and crap the same way you or anyone else would use retard, dumbass, or faggot.

Well, you've already been given a solution, I think. -smlocalhost will take care of those problems. Also...

Yeah right, that's certainly a very civilized and friendly way of talking.

p0p3y3Z - no, being nice is not that same as being racist !

As said before - if you don't want your server to be moderated by global moderators then just disconnect it from master server (-smlocalhost) - otherwise don't complain about that your server is moderated.

As a follow up to this thread, I have created the following ticket:

http://sourceforge.net/apps/trac/redeclipse/ticket/145

While the issue will be addressed, it is impossible to have this implemented prior to a full release. I have triaged this to "non-critical", but it will be dealt with by the time v1.3 comes out.
