Sorry for the delay in answering, I wrote this a few days ago on a different computer, but apparently didn't click on submit

Thank you for your help, I never run STK in full screen so I'm not sure if what you described would be the case.
Even easier to have this problem if you are in windows mode. All your symptoms would be explained by this (and assuming that you have focus-follow-mouse or so defined), for example:
if I am turning right, for example, the front wheels will stay in that position and I will keep going around in a circle, if the terrain will let me. The ability to control speed (along with everything else) is lost too.
This can happen if you turn right, then move the cursor away from the STK windows. So STK would not receive the 'release right turn' event and keep on turning. All your key strokes are then being delivered to some other application. Which could also explain the OS issues you had - depending on what was selected in the background by your key strokes, you might cause all kind of issues.
Have a look at the configuration of your desktop, and see if you have focus-follow-mouse or so defined, and change it (not sure what it's called).
@asciimonster: The only thing is that STK worked absolutely fine when I was using Windows Vista. This never happened.
Yes, windows does not do focus-follow-mouse, so all your key strokes kept on being delivered to the STK window.
Cheers,
Joerg
