Opensource browser game

Postby Razarion » 19 Mar 2012, 22:07

We have developed a browser based real time strategy game.
http://www.razarion.com

Please give us some feedback
  • How well does it work in your browser
  • What do you think about the in-game GUI
  • What do you think about the other pages (layout, design)
  • What can we improve
This is an open source project.
Information about the used technology can be found on the about page.

I only played a few minutes, it's quite good.
There are some problem with the image of units, when I ask to move a unit it shows the picture frame for a second, probably while loading the picture of the unit with the right angle. Maybe the pictures could be loaded in cache or someting to solve this? (I use Firefox)
Also, I did not understand why I was not able to build some units that I had enough money to build. In the second level, I was able to build 400$ tanks but not 300$ ones.

Good game, but I stuck on level 4 :|

A few suggestions:

  • Ctrl+click or Ctrl+box select to select multiple units
  • Show unit name in popup help
  • Add in-game chatting feature

It's amazing, I would have expected slow speed and more problems with drag/drop-box selection in a html5 rts :) great project!

Code and art is here by the way: http://code.google.com/p/controltheland/

Is the game art under any particular license?

While I applaud this for the sake of technology... I find it hard to accept that we should go back to 1990 level graphics and gameplay just to play in a browser (with HTML5, but flash and the like is hardly better).

Well, after all we play games because they're fun, not because they have shiny graphics, right? :)
That said, I also think that it's not the right way to move everything into browsers - and be it just for performance reasons. Most of these games are just slide shows in Seamonkey :P Someone has to tell Mozilla to speed up rendering, instead of screwing with JS engines to outrace V8, which supposedly will help them win Browser War II. Guess what, I consider switching to Chromium by now.
/rant off (sorry, got a little offtopic there)

We did some improvements:
  • Sprite map used to prevent image flickering
  • Mini map shows items more correctly on large terrains
  • Fade in and out fixed if the mission is finished
  • High sore table has been redesigned

Please give us some feedback

Nice attempt IMO, I'd compare it with Warzone for the feeling it gave me... I wish the assets could be freely-licensed.

The selection of units and targetting doesn't always give a feeling of control, maybe there could be better feedbacks/indications on actions taken and clicks. It would help when a click or a selection goes wrong.

It took me a few minutes to notice the first part was a tutorial. Maybe get the attention of the visitor to it at some point to ensure we get aware of it ? (I was thinking: okay, it's a demo, not at a playable state)

I didn't want to go further playing, just like for any game I need a catchy gameplay to make me stay on it, but I admit the "no install, play it from the web with friends" can be seducing.
