I'd wait for the next release before spreading further, which should be within the next few days. SVN is in the final testing phase now.

I took the liberty of helping some randoms in a server create a clan. More clans I think can be healthy for a community because if gives players a variety of teams to choose from. I think its safe to say most of our clans are different in some way. And every player wants to feel like they are a part of something.

Well is that a bad thing? I thought you guys wanted as much publicity as possible for this good game ...

It is a bad thing to do right now because version 1.2 will most likely be released tomorrow. Besides that, especially the *buntu software repositories are often extremely outdated, by months if not years, and we probably won't see them adding Red Eclipse 1.2 before we will release 1.3, causing more issues than anything else. This is why we generally recommend *buntu users to use PlayDeb or Desura. Adding it to Cnet, FileHippo, Softpedia and the likes would be fine I would suppose, but not before 1.2 gets released (especially because there is no updater for the game). It may also be nice to have one person taking care of this, so he will keep all the sources up-to-date. The current risk is that if someone leaves and doesn't give the login information for the sites like Cnet, FileHippo or Softpedia to someone else who can take care of it those sites will contain outdated copies.

Hmmm...

Not sure how I should intepret this comment. Am I mistaking? On most Linux distributions the repositories would be updated, but besides the message "This server requires a newer version of Red Eclipse" I don't believe there is anything showing that an update is required.

By "them", currently you mean "me" :þ, I do plan on trying to get Red Eclipse in before the Ubuntu feature freeze in february, so hopefully It won't be that behind.

Though I'll note down to look into backporting 1.3 to previous releases, at least LTS, once that comes comes.

anything q3 based might be a good place to start since id has seen fit to shut off their master lists for q3 and enemy territory and a few others.

As places to advertise, you mean? Sounds like a good plan, they'd be looking for a fast-paced shooter o,o

I think what this game needs, is better advertisement.

It seems that the word about this game is getting around because we've had an increase of players (well, trolls) recently and today a lot of them decided to log onto the servers. I personally recorded a spammer (Mr. Urquhart) with Fraps that i'll upload for you guys to see.

See, I would suggest better advertisement, but I don't think we want to advertise everywhere. LastProject made a joke about some one providing a RE download link on 4chan. While that does sound funny, that could have attributed to the number of unwanted and undesired players in the servers. For the record, NO ONE LIKES A TEAMKILLER or A SPAMMER.

Yea, I saw him today spamming too.

Anyway, I think that this game should be mostly advertised on forums/websites about *nix software (mostyly *nix games). Repositories are good places to advertise RE, Desura too, anyway it's good way to post about RE on blogs/twitters/youtube etc.

BTW. I think that RE should have player registration - this will stop most of the trolls.

+1
Any video I upload automatically ends up on my Twitter, and I hope that attributes to our playerbase in some way. And occasionally if I work hard enough on a video, I might deem it worthy to place on my blog. But I agree, just a small link to RE's Main Page would suffice on the twitters and various blog sites.

Good Idea. That makes it easy to ban spammer and cheater accounts. You also could have a profile where you can access your stats, set a profile picture, you could have friendslists... etc. Much more possibilities.

This feature + the ability to play custom maps online, (wich then would be downloaded from a global map server +all the custom textures, automatically if you join the server) = 200 times better game :D

When I have enough time, I will make a thread on the Bay 12 Forums. It has good people, and has contributed pretty majorly to some other small games' communities. (Aurora, CataclysmRL, Towns...).

hmm 4chan..
I ran enemy territory for years, and up until last year it was mostly unnoticed by the idiots who like to udp flood everything they dont happen to like. Probably isnt a good idea to advertise on known hack sites as this I think will eventually lead to those idiots trying to take down server with retarded udp floods.
I have posted to splashdamage because idsoftware has discontinued their master server list for et,q3 and rtcw, dont know if it generated anything but it seemed a good place to start.

No problem.

I think that if there will be any clan stats / official clan registration then maybe clans will be able to keep groups of players with the game.

It (the community) is capable of growing by itself. I just joined it because I got bored of iGib venice over and over and over... (repeat "and over" several thousand times, take another breath, repeat several thousand more times) ...and over and over again. If everyone wanted to actively grow the community, one of the best places to start would be leeching away Sauer players who are bored of playing the same thing over and over and over (here we go again :) ) and over and over...
I lost the game.

hamolton {l Wrote}:Having a bigger community is always better, and RE will need work before it will be eligible. Honestly, RE plays very well as a game, but it's really ugly. Like, in lots of ways. I think RE has to be a lot prettier, it doesn't have to have cryengine 3 graphics, but it could use prettier models, maps, and engine effects and features (breakable glass, openable doors, destroyable objects would be cool). It's not very special yet: Assaultcube is the greatest real looking fps that can work on ancient computers (school!) and urt is kinda pretty, and is the best realistic open source looking one. I mean, no offence or anything, I know these are not easy problems to fix and I'm giving vague insults without any way to fix them, it's just that I don't think RE can expand much without major improvements.

Finally someone does think like me!!
I also ask for better visuals, NOT like CryEngine 3, but something more like Id Tech 4 (Open-Source, OpenGL based, really nice graphics and shaders).
Because 80+% of the "gamers" (NOT IN RE COMMUNITY, I'M TALKING IN GENERAL) are looking toward the graphics, instead of the gameplay itself.
