my first track [wip]

Arthur {l Wrote}:Well we have textures for zippers now, so that means track designers can use different texturing for different speeds. E.g. have more arrows and a larger texture area for strong zippers. In probably 95% of tracks, the standard speed is used anyway. For the rest, people should try to not do a too wide variety of speeds, at least not in the same track. Then I doubt there should be much of a problem.

I don't see this as a problem at all: it should be made obvious in the track design that this zipper is meant to help you in the jump. I doubt that anyone will care or even notice if this zipper is faster/slower than other zippers. It will be obvious from the context. We just shouldn't start misusing this in all kind of non-jumping zippers.

Cheers,

Right, that was what I was getting at. Track zippers should be mostly redundant with nitro anyway, except in certain special cases like jumps. So having the ability to have different speed settings for on-ground zippers doesn't pose a problem at all IMO. And if someone really wants, they can make insane addon tracks with incredible speeds. Doesn't mean we have to play them (though I'd at least try to see if it was any fun). ;)
Hey pal, I took an oath for justice! "In happy days or tightest tights..." or something like that.

another update
giant tux statues ( ghost )
some holes in the track ( needs more tweaking for a better challenge )
poles ( although the AI kinda fails at slippin trough )
the corner after the supportbeams is now a sharp turn, useless rocks now less useless. be carefull not to fall into the water :)
small update on the fossil
repositioning of tree, made static. roots covering small part of track

note that the lava and water is not in yet. falling of the cliff is kinda anoying because you don't respawn, so don't :P

Again, cool improvements !

May I remind you to keep in mind the poly numbers ? It's pretty OK for now, but I think if the track was made so that Irrlicht does not need to display more than 100K tris in each place, this would be great.

The traps you added on the road shows the AI needs a refresh, if we want to add some funny stuff on tracks. I'll note what need to be improved ;)

I'm also quite interested in that video actually :)
didn't do anything to the track in the last few days.
I do have a few ideas:
another jump (ignored by AI), on the green at the start area. just before the poles. so you can skip the S turn. still it should be a small challenge to find it, and get right.
the corner after the lava bridge part is kinda boring. more obstacles like rocks?

but I really could use some critic/suggestions.

the part where the AI falls into the holes of the track could be solved with a forked path arround it I think.

I think this track is cool like that. If you add too much stuff, it can become "overloaded". To me it's important to let some room between tricky parts, so I think you should not add a lot more (maybe one or 2 but not more), as this is a small track.

Maybe you can also focus on texturing now ? ;)

Iridium: neat and good ideas I think! The vid required a lot of clicking for pause-read. :)

Might have been to slow if it was with voice though unless steamlined.

I don't like surprise zippers :P

wow :D awesome vid, very usefull and motivating.
agree on most stuff ( if not all )

some comments then:
the tux ghosts aren't ghosts, they're statues! ( well at least in my mind :P ). although that means they need to be set static ofcourse.
I knew about the shortcut, gonna fix that with checklines. ( need to read up on that )
agree with the poles, its more of a try-out with obstacles. I think I'm gonna replace that with a rock wall, where the AI race arround, but with a small opening to let you cut the corner.
grass is gonna be a slowdown bastard :)
I like the item placement suggestions, had no thoughts about it yet.
the holes in the track are there to make that part more interesting. also they should give the impression of a beat-down part of the track. could make this more obvious with textures showing cracks
no thoughts about how to do the foliage on the tree yet. shape/size/color.
the rocks.. yep they need variation

and thanks!, its really awesome to have a video commenting on the track

texturing is gonna start after I'm done with the track's shape ( almost there ).
And I've still got allot to learn to make good textures. It will take some time. aiming for custom textures but only if I can make some cool ones

if (Video == motivating) { this-->work_on(track); print "^_^ thanks";} endif; // could replace with while (true) ...

Oh.

Why does everyone hate shortcuts? I vote for leaving it and making some of the the expert AI's aware of it!

Look at Snow Tux Peak for this.

No probs.

This is going to be a great track when finished. Its challenging just by itself in its design.

Awesome job!

Hello all, I didn't get an answer back about this track, so I assumed that it was okay, and worked on this.
I textured it, improved it a bit, and added boxes, bananas, etc...
hope you like it

Did TYS leave a license statement? Without that we can't really re-use his track :(

Reagrding the texturing, it's a nice start, but a few notes (constructive criticism) : first I think the sand texture is too yellow, it should be more brownish to blend better with the walls of the canyon. Also the ground in the cave should not be yellow, it should be more like rock/dust and greyish.

Also check the attached screenshot, the texturing of the walls is quite weird, there should be less tiling and it should be more continuous

I tried asking here if i could work on it (i didn't really expect an answer since gruntunbur hasn't been back on here for a while) I emailed him, but I got no response, so I went ahead and worked on it(a great start to a career as a pirate). I noticed the texturing problem in blender, but in-game I looked and didn't notice it.
Is it okay for me to work on this, or should I wait for an answer?(If I can, I will fix the walls and stuff).

whoops, sry for not working on the track and not checking my mail >_>
didn't thought about the licence stuff yet, but its all "do what you want with it" for me
I actually did have a go at texturing.
first got to check your version :) .I'll attach my textured version later
and if you want to work on it thats fine by me, maybe I'll give it another go too
thanks
----
i see you've put some work in it :) awesome
like the stepping stones over the lava

attached my textured version. its partial. just a tryout. nothing finale.
there are some extra non-used textures there too
btw you don't have to stick with the name, its just a WIP title so to speak

to be clear I don't have any plans to actually finnish it.
I do want to. but I don't want other to wait for that.
so continue with the good job you're doing :)
and use/rename/copy whatever you want

Hi,

you're definitely making progress, congratulations :) however there is still more work to do, there are quite a few cases of stretched textures
