Story Mode

Story Mode

Postby cheesebrother » 19 Dec 2011, 07:01

Hi all, last night I was reading of the possibility of story mode in stk and I just love the idea. http://supertuxkart.sourceforge.net/Story_mode I really think that it should be made and I’ve got some ideas. In the story line proposed the classic idea of GNU being taken by nolok is good but the flying carpet not so much. The problem with this is that then a flying carpet kart would need to be made for charater if they were to use it. My idea instead is that in the last race nolok has such an incredible kart that you’ll need extra juice to beat him. There could be a power up which the player starts with and as he playes through story mode it becomes more and more powerful. When you would use this powerup (it would have a gauge like nitros) you would be accellerated like n but even more powerful (obviously it wouldn’t last long) and when you are using it any baddies driven through or thrown at you kart are harmless. This would be you special ‘weapon’ with with to fight nolok. Of coure he being the evil bad guy would have his array of special weapons. Perhaps a green sheild to disallow you from blowing him up and special green bubble gum which would blow up a kart on contact. This special weapon would also allow for another mode in normal play, with everybody having as powerful the weapon is in the current state in story mode. Like nitros it wouldn't be visible on the kart, just a guage on the HUD and a symbol refering to it in the story.

In the story mode there are groups of tracks. At the end of each of these groups you could race/fight nolok (he too would become progressively more powerful throughout the game). If tracks were to be put into groups like these then there would also be a good way of organizing them in the normal race track select. There would be one of those controls with text in the middle and push buttons on each side with group names such as Oceania, Tropical, Snowland, … and of couse a group for addons.

In the website they mentioned the possibility of making ai to fight against in battle mode. I for one think that this would be awessome. It could make it so that you would fight against nolok and other evil characters occasionally in story mode and besides that would fill in some gaps when you don’t have 3 or 4 people for a good fight.

Anyway i really hope you stk developers consider Story Mode. Right now the group of challenges is good enough but a story mode would be a LOT of fun. I've tried to give suggestions for things to be done to help you.

Hi,

indeed the current story is not final. The current running idea is the one that starts with "Nolok has captured GNU, and since he's rather cocky, ...". And I definitely plan to make Nolok have some special abilities to make him harder to beat. Now I'm not sure we want to race him on every set of tracks, this may get too repetitive.

Definetly not :). I was thinking at the end of each set you would race him on one track but perhaps that is even to rare. Maybe there would be 2 times during the story that you would race against him and then again at the end. This gives the player excitement when he wins these really insignificant races and also makes more anticipation for the final nolok with all the glory of his weapons. Perhaps another thing to do with progressive fight would be to have 2 or 3 other characters to fight along the way (i can think of evil tux as one off the top of my head), this would give more satisfaction because each time you would have really beat them and it would put nolok in a place of supreme athourity until the end when you beat him. Please forgive me, i'm just pulling out different classic story lines from mario and such games :). Anyway they are good things and could be worth using in STK as well.

The issue with that approach is that we only have Nolok as an evil character in the main game at the moment, and many of the old SuperTux characters were replaced because we got better and more on-topic karts, as they featured mascots from the free software world. If we were to start using EvilTux, mr. Iceblock etc. again, they'd probably need a major overhaul (at least for EvilTux) to match the current and future graphical improvements.

Yeah, especially with EvilTux; the design of the back of his kart is a bit dated.
Maybe something new, with six wheels like this? :) http://www.mariowiki.com/Koopa_King

Hi,

the texturing could be improved in some areas. For instance check the attached screenshot, we can see each polygon :

Screen shot 2011-12-20 at 7.10.17 PM.png

also, for the window, try instead to place the screws around the window in a circle, like on http://photoshopcontest.com/images/thum ... eonr6d.jpg

keep it up!

So for this world map do you plan to render a picture of it or actually have a 3d map in the game? If you were to make an actuall 3d map it would be pretty neat, anyway this map/picture should have a lot of detail so that you can be way in close. I know that the picture in the Story Mode article isn't finall or anything but i think that in the end it should be changed so that instead of having one thing down here and another up there it should go straight from left to right (right now it goes right to left). This makes more sense as far as order goes and also would allow to make the map more interesting if it was a straight line. Why? If it goes staight left to right there isn't nearly as much empty space, making less space to fill with interesting things. You would simply move with the arrow keys back and forth horizontally instead of vertically as well. Perhaps pressing a key to go from one viewpoint (i'm guessing a viewpoint over each theme?) to another would be the best.

It's decided to go with a 3D world. It's currently in the works, and some details are yet to be worked out; if you want to try it already, it's in the current SVN version of the game. It's nowhere near finished, so help with making models and textures are welcome. :)

Yes, the SVN version is the development version of STK. SVN means Subversion, which is the version control system used for the game.
If you want to try the development version on Windows, you'll need to get TortoiseSVN and Microsoft Visual Studio Express. Further instructions can be found here: http://supertuxkart.sourceforge.net/How ... ws_version

Well then i guess i'll leave that alone :). If the map is in 3d then it can't be the one in the article? Could someone post a picture of the current map, maybe i could make something or try to help, once removed :D. Just like ctdabomb with the spaceship.

Great improvements, good job!

Now some more constructive criticism ;)
the inside of the window looks a bit cloudy to me. I think the window would look nice if we saw a darker inside with some reflections on it, maybe like http://www.makecincinnatiweird.com/wp-c ... pace02.jpg

Also check this screenshot :
Screen shot 2011-12-21 at 1.30.41 PM.png

the texture seam is at quite a weird place. I think it would be better to put it in the back where it's less visible, or on the sides with the wires. And where there is a seam, it would be nice to add a line of screws like http://us.123rf.com/400wm/400/400/ellen ... -plate.jpg to make the seam look like 2 plates had been screwed together, instead of now where it's just a line where the texture is not smooth. This would also look nicer than random screws all over the rocket

Keep it up!

I've got another idea for story mode, this one i really think that you should do. When I got the new version is played through all the challenges with a sibling. That's the problem - the other person. We passed the controller back and forth switching from race to race but it would be the most fun if a few people could play through the challeges/story at the same time. It would include everybody besides adding extra fun to the game.

Edit: Just thinking how this would work because we don't want one player to mess up other karts to help the other win. It would need to be that all players would have to pass in order to proceed - this might make it a bit harder but would cut out cheating and force teamwork (not in a cheating way of course :)). Then on one-on-one races it would switch back to player being the only racer like in the final showdown with nolok and other races where for all to win the race would be too hard for multiple humans.

I didn't download the file, but posting zips of the overworld isn't going to be of much help because the overworld relies quite a lot on features that are not available in 0.7.3, so if you try it in 0.7.3 I'm not sure what it will look like

If you using STK svn version, you don't need to download them; if you only have STK 0.7.3 they won't work correctly. So this download is pretty useless :)
