Does Speed Up Also Give you Lag?

I just got today for the first time (in 0.7.3), and every time it gives me a lag spike. I was curious whether this is on my end (computer specs)? or a known bug?

Edit: It's the arrow thing that briefly makes you go faster ">".

They are called "zippers".
Depending on you settings (options->video->graphical detail) a blur effect is shown every time you hit a zipper. If this effect is too much for your graphics card it could create lag.

The effects are orange on my PC.

the orange effect is the zipper particle and when STK is slow the effect covers almost the whole screen
