Kalado's karts

Postby kalado » 19 Dec 2011, 22:41

Hi all, it's a long time since I haven't been over here, as I've seen there has been lots of changes on the game, the new addon system looks great.
I wanted to start working again on the egypt track but before I wanted to make a small kart just for fun. I chose the Minix mascot which is just really nice, here's what I've so far:
preview.jpg

Now I just have to finish the texturing and to add some animations.
Critics and comments are welcome.

Only judging from the screenshot, I like the character, but the kart lacks details to me. Probably because it's not finished yet?
And I wonder if it's not too tall as well.

Good work otherwise, I like it :)

Yes, please make the mascot slightly smaller so that it does not end up like the Geeko kart :)

Indeed, the kart lacks detail. Needs:
Exhaust pipes
Paint job
Maybe an engine scoop?

And an emblem for minix

Also, The wheels look way too far away from the body - should be closer to it, and make them bigger. Perhaps use the wheel textures from the Suzanne kart? ;)

Happy to see you back kalado :)
Nice model, good textures, but to be frank I don't like his vehicle.

Good luck.

To be frank I don't either, but I see that it could be converted into something like the old Formula One cars; eg the B Dasher in Mario Kart DS, and the real life equivalent:

So yeah, it's not pretty. I would start with making the character model a bit smaller and then go from there :)

I understand you don't like the kart, indeed it wasn't a good one. I gave it another try and here's what I got.

I think it's better, now I just have to work on the textures and add some details. What do you, guys, think?

Thanks for the answers, I worked the texturing by adding an AO pass baked from Blender, now I think I'm finished with this step, I also added the animations. Here I give you the final kart so that you guys can try it, I hope you'll have some good critics to make it a bit nicer, and then perhaps it will be ready to upload it as an addon. By the way, I didn't understood really well how the new addon manager was working: can any user just post its work on the manager to publish it as an addon?

Yes, any user can register on the add-on site, and then post their work there. Once the content is moderator-approved (everything gets approved eventually so long as the artists cooperate) then the add-on shows up in-game.

Posted work is not immediately view-able to the public - a moderator needs to approve the work first (in most cases, this just consists of checking the license information, and testing to see if it functions properly). Right now, there is only one unapproved submission - just waiting on a minor license fix.

The moderator process is in place to keep out submissions that may be inappropriate for children, for example, or to make sure that proper attribution is given for others' work.

This is a very nice kart. I can't wait to see it in-game!

Thanks for the explanation sj04736, now I understand, I'll submit my work today.

Now, I've started to work on another kart, this is the Panda from Window maker, for the kart I chose an old car as a reference, making a bit more cartoony, here is what I got so far, as always your critics are welcome:

Hello to all of you. Since I'm currently on holidays, I've decided to finish the panda kart. I checked his name on the windowmaker's site and actually it's a girl, Amanda. I've finished the animations and the textures and I've got a first working version of the kart. Here's a picture.
untitled.png

Since I used the blender's render engine, the window is quite weird, but this doesn't appear in the game.
Maybe you could try it before I submit it on stkaddons.

1. Yes you were right, a small error, I didn't placed the kart at the right place, shame on me. Now it's fixed.
2. For the window, I was just complaining about the blender render engine, it looks good in Irrlicht as you can see on the screen capture I've uploaded.

I tried another color for the car, I have troubles choosing the good one, what do you think about this kind of red, it looks good to my mind.

I thought I could keep the same thread as it isn't that long and as the kart will be soon finished.
