[MAP]Abandoned Station

[MAP]Abandoned Station

Postby TheLastProject » 25 Nov 2011, 20:30

It took me seven hours. The result is no better than mediocre. It's heavily based on Station-1, and is originally made for Bomber Ball. It should work for Capture The Flag and Defend The Flag as well, and is rather small. The idea behind the map was to make a map that can also be solo'd, for when one person is in an egocentric mood or nobody is willing to cooperate. However, teamplay should remain possible and even helpful.

Even though Station-1 is a map that's relatively light and "happy", I did not feel this would fit within the Red Eclipse style well, and therefore my version of it turned into more of an "Abandoned Station".

Please note that this is a first test release. I realize the map is nowhere near completion, and may never reach that point. I am interested in ANY comment, ranging from texture choices to lightning tips, to name suggestions and any other kind of tip or complaint you have regarding the map.

Please see the attachment to try the map (that is, if you don't mind dying inside due to how badly I abused the in-game editor to create a truly horrible result).

I hope I did send the right version...

Edit: I forgot to add waypoints. Expect useless bots sitting in the spawn being afraid to go through the door.
Edit 2: The weapons in the middle room can be picked up through the walls. No need to mention this. I've already fixed this in my development version.
Edit 3: New version uploaded, spawn points for FFA DM added, weapon placement reconsidered, added models to make the lightning seem more logical, various other minor changes.

I'd like to know where you got that screen size from 1360x731 (seems weird, even for a laptop :P) but other than that, I think the map looks pretty well for it being your first map. Im not really a 'door' person, but when you said bomber ball, it interested me.

It'd be great to have a nice good playlist for BB, cause the only good maps for it are Dropzone and Futuresport, at the moment.

I have KDE set to run Red Eclipse as a borderless Window but keeping the taskbar there. To make sure no text appears below the taskbar, the game gets the complete horizontal space and the vertical space minus the height of the taskbar. If I don't do this, my notifications won't show up while in-game which bothers me a lot. Therefore the weird resolution. My system resolution is 1360x768.

Hmmm, I'm not really happy with it yet, but I'm kinda stuck at the moment and can't get any good ideas and had someone calling the map "awesome" (though I have to disagree) so I decided to post it here to see if I could get any tips. The doors are only as a kinda of spawncamp protection. You spawn in a locked area with doors that open when you come close, to which you can enter the rest of the map. The doors will only open if you approach them from the inside, therefore drastically lowering the ability of a player to wait at the opponents spawn and killing everyone before they can do anything. It's far from perfect, but I thought it was a nice addition.

True, must say though, this map probably doesn't fit there. It is a relatively small map in which scoring is most likely way too easy. I tried to make it harder by putting a Rocket Launcher near the scoring post, so a team can get one person to defend there and most likely at least stop the first attack, though I of course can't know how effective such ideas are without testing it with players.

Going to have to try this. I like the idea of confined spaces leading to tense 1v1.

Map has been updated.

Changes:
- Added spawnpoints for FFA DM
- Added models to make the lightning seem more logical
- Added lightning inside the spawn points
- Reconsidered weapon placement
- Textured some small places I forgot to texture
- Made the doors open quicker, so you can't bump into them anymore
- Made it impossible to pick up some weapons through walls
- Changed topic title

Map works for the following gamemodes:
DeathMatch (with or without teams)
Capture The Flag
Defend The Flag
Bomber Ball
