Desura link on the homepage?

Desura link on the homepage?

Postby TheLastProject » 23 Nov 2011, 21:51

We currently have 4 links on the homepage. Facebook, YouTube, Google and PlayDeb. However, Red Eclipse is also available on Desura. Seeing how Red Eclipse has quite a following on Desura, and Desura is available for both Windows and Linux (yes, the Closed Beta is over), and allows voting for Red Eclipse it can help us to get on the "Most Popular" page there and get more users. Of course, we don't HAVE to, but I just thought it was a good idea.

They have a good icon here: http://www.desura.com/groups/desura/about

Which could lead to the Red Eclipse page (http://www.desura.com/games/red-eclipse)

(They have a high-quality version in their mediakit)

The problem right now is, of course, that we already have 4 buttons there and no space for a 5th one. However, we can add least change
"or find Linux packages on PlayDeb, AUR, and Chakra"
to something like
"or find Linux packages on Desura, PlayDeb, AUR, and Chakra"
Though this would make it seem like you can't get the Windows version there either... Perhaps something like "Also available on Desura"?

Well, I'll leave this topic here to discuss what you guys think would be the best way, if you think this is a good idea in the first place. Discuss, people, discuss!

Put a Desura link (with a little icon so people can see it's there) under the regular download link.

hmm,
No Icon under the download button please, It will be ugly (specially if you mix icon+text link) and make the button less visible.
A text link under the button and the icon in the bottom right with others (may add also AUR and Chakra there to have a consistent 2nd line)

I'll consider icons for package link under the button on the new website, but for now you it's not a good idea to mix text and icons like that.

I've gone and done a quick hack to add Desura to our website.

Looks great at the moment. I only figured out that "on Google" were the Google Search results for "Red Eclipse" after having logged out from the forum. I first thought it was Google+ or so :P But yeah, hopefully people will see it, will think "cool" and grab it there. Desura does make installing quite easy :P

good, Google was pretty useless.
the wording under the button start to be a bit long however.
"or use Desura, a free digital distribution application for Windows/Linuxand find Linux packages on PlayDeb, AUR, and Chakraget the development version and live on the bleeding edge"
Maybe something like linux package drop down menu, or contextual infobubble on roll over for Desura and svn, or something else.

Development version | Desura | Linux Package or just alternate downloads (with contextual box or dedicated page)

Or just the download button and then another page with all the download option with description (sourceforge, linux package, etc..)
