100 Papercuts

Postby Tuxfan » 31 Jan 2011, 00:29

What are the little things where STK can improve? I invite everyone to collect some of the minor bugs/ missing features and annoyings.
-----
My suggestion: Just before a race starts some sounds are played which are too loud in comparison to the game music in my opinion. (three low chimes and a high one; if I remember right, a further sound is played which is relatively lound) Could you (@Auria/Joerg) please reduce the volume of those sounds?

Hi

changing the volume of the sounds could be done, I'm just not sure it's really needed?

Regarding this start sound ... I'd really like to be able to turn it off somewhere in the options. Sometimes I want to drive to my own music, so I disable STK's music or I don't want to hear anything at all, so I turn out my speakers. But IIRC it stops a bit while playing that sound (even if the music is turned off) and that's some time where I always ask myself: What exactly goes on now? Let's start this [censored] race. It would be great to turn it off :)

EDIT:
I tested it - the start sound is played even if music is turned off. That's not really good either :|

Crend: regarding disabling the startup music, this could be done, I'll create a ticket

Hi, I don't know wether it's a little thing or not but I thnik bump mapping would be great. For the sound, it the option to disable it would be great.

There's another little thing bothering me; especially at canyon:
If you drive downwards a ramp, the angle of the forward camera is adjusted so you see what's in front of you. But if you look back, you only see the road if the ramp / hill is too steep.
IMHO it would be great if the angle of the backward camera would also change.

Irrlicht supports bump mapping, so it shouldn't be too hard to get this done (I hope). What I would need is an example track (and some time to work on it).

For the sound, it the option to disable it would be great.

SFX and music can both be enables/disabled independently (and if it's buggy like it appears to be, we will fix that - best is to open a ticket in our new 'trac' system). Or are you talking of disabling only that one sfx?

Could you display highscore of a whole Grand Prix?

This could be interesting, but I'm not sure where we'd put them, we're sort of out of screen space

Maybe push the Start Grand Prix Button over to underneath the picture and display them there?

That would a) break the consistency of the menus (as the start button is somewhere else than in normal races) and b) clutter up the screen very much. :|

Maybe the highscores can be displayed instead of the track images - since those images are already displayed on the track selection screen.

Or we add another the high-score display to the image list to be shown: so you see high scores first, then the track images, then high scores again. Or: show only highscores, but if the mouse hovers over a track, display the track image instead (not fair for people who are using a gamepad, unless we allow them to select the names as well).

No, switching of the GP images are annoying enough, thankyouverymuch. :p
But on-hover of the track images could display the best time over the image in a bright font, and the same could be done for the Grand Prix images. That would be unobtrusive but informative as you would know the highscore before you start the race. :)

What about this ? Is it OK to see only one track at once ?

I thought displaying the overall highscore for the Grand Prix were the feature Tuxfan asked for?

Ah, OK. Why the arrows then? For shuffling through the screenshots of the tracks? I prefer the automatic way, but some fading between them there and in the track selection screen would make it much more pleasant.

Well, it can automatically switch, but if people want to see which tracks are in the GP without waiting I think it's convenient for them to have these arrows ^^

Personally, I would find the track list far more important than the screenshots... though I have no idea how to display everything nicely then without cluttering everything up :|

I don't like the arrows, IMHO they are uneeded bloat; but for the rest, maybe, I don't hardly oppose it :) it's just that I find the track list quite important. And i think screenshots appeal to people more than text, so I would like to keep the screenshots too

They could be replaced by just a change of the screenshot (without having to wait for the automatic one) when we click on it.

I also think that the track list is important and should be seen without any click...
But how to do it ? ... outch, headache !

I have no idea what the "cumulated score" is meant to be, but if we really want to have everything in that window, we should move it on top of the highscore list. This way, we would have a cleaner layout, I think..
