Brainstorming : new challenges concept

Helle everybody

That my new idea for the challenges. For me challenges is essentially fun. Actually challenges are difficult and boring. They are race challenges and for race challenges, we have many mode and grand prix. My main inspiration is achievement (in xbox 360) and trophy (in PS3).

The challenges are listed in order of difficult.

one stars -> really easy
five stars -> very difficult

Some exemples

Nitro is good: Use nitro for 20 sec (2 stars)
ice cream: slow down 5 enemy with the cake (1 star)
Around the world: travel 1000 miles (5 stars)
Energy economy: Don't use nitro and finish first one (2 stars)
Space race: Load the nitro bar in XR391 for launching the rocket (5 stars)
Slash: Fall in every game liquids (1 star)
...

Each challenges have a different icon (in this case is ice cream challenge).

For an exemple of achievement of a game see this (halo reach achievement) and achievement (wikipedia)

What do you think ? What's your opinion ? Do you like this kind of challenges ? Have you any idea of challenges ?

Not sure what devs will say about it, but it is a rather fresh idea ;) And 'Energy economy' sounds rather challenging :)
Btw, while saying 'start' you mean 'stars'? (etoile, if I'm not mistaken)

This looks like a nice GUI concept, but we may need to have more brainstorming ;) actually my idea was to add a career mode with an overworld (think supertux http://www.techmynd.com/wp-content/uplo ... -tux-5.jpg but perhaps in 3D), with challenges on the way. I think this would be even cooler than a bunch of icons?

I think those could be separate things. A challenge would unlock/open something, while an achievement might be something 'smaller', i.e. you could get several of them in one race. Achievements could be more difficult to get, but since they don't unlock anything, it wouldn't matter for the actual gameplay.

Achievements could be linked to a tutorial mode as well.
Hey pal, I took an oath for justice! "In happy days or tightest tights..." or something like that.

Hey I was thinking, if karts effectively had different characteristics, I think it could be nice to have challenges reserved to given categories of players, e.g. "operating system mascots", "text editor mascots", "desktop environment mascots", "chatting program mascot", just like is done in Gran Turismo with the countries or the brands...That would let people troll while racing, and is a little bit geek-oriented :p

Just an idea, that's the brainstorming topic after all :)

I agree with that. Achievements are usually added in games for enthusiastic players who want more (in World of Goo, they call them "Obsessive Completion Distinction Criteria" :p ). The first achievements are generally very easy, and the last ones almost impossible to get ("win a race on the old mine, using only 2 wheels").

Since this is brainstorming, why not link the achievements to the future online mode? It would a be a way for players to brag about how good or how long they play the game. Maybe have the numbers of achievements next to the final result of players after a race. The list could be something like this:

indeed we thought about it; but first we need replays, because otherwise it's way too easy for people to cheat by modifying the source code to send bogus numbers
