Re: Feature Brainstorming

Postby Kinsu » 08 Apr 2011, 18:25

More karts would be fun but this is not a real necessity for the moment I think. And STK would look more pro if existing karts were approximately equal graphically.

Then, to increase the "lifespand" of the game (the time one's have to play before completing the whole game), more tracks are required. This could really be one of STK's strength, and a lot of tracks can be made thanks to the community.

Physics are great at the moment, and even are going to be improved if I'm right.

Performance is nicely handled as I can play on my little macbook. Just need to keep it like that while adding features, which is not that easy...

I would not say "more tracks", or yes, more addon tracks would be nice. But better/more imaginative tracks are something I'd really like to see. Also, not on the list but Internet/LAN multiplayer is pretty high on my list, even though I sometimes play with my siblings using gamepads.

Edit: forgot to mention I'd like more battle tracks, as addons or otherwise.

100% agree. STK needs loopings, big jumps, hidden shortcuts, acrobatic features, etc. etc. !

I think everyone wants STK to have an Internet gaming feature, but let's be patient ! I think hiker is right and that STK needs to be really solid before that, because it'll tenfold the gaming community.

Yeah. that's what I'm talking about (for the tracks).
Indeed I also agree with the milestones. I just want networked multiplayer so badly. ;)

2 things:

- online multiplayer
- "battle arena"

Other than that: nothing special at the moment.

IMHO there's nothing as important as networking which won't come very soon. So I think the most important thing to improve now is the GUI which is currently in work (speaking both of the menu and the game view)

Feature Suggestion: "community management" or "use the advantages of opensourceness"
Add a button to supertuxkart called "Community" that starts the default webbrowser and open a community website. On that website several ways should be shown how to contribute to Supertuxkart - propagating the message "You can improve this project yourself".
Example: I didn't expect it to be so easy to create a grand prix on my own or that the follow the leader mode can be tweaked simply by editing an xml file. -> Use this the folowing way on the community website:
Create mothly competitions for the community that are easy to solve (like editing xml files). Add the information that is necessary to fullfill the task. Provide a way to submit and rate the results by the community and integrate the best results back in the game (on the next release). That would make supertuxkart outstanding compared to other "closed" games and maybe someone would want to get involved more deeply.

@Tuxfan : This is a great idea. I agree that a "Community" button in the game GUI (maybe next to the actualities messages ?) would give STK's openness more visibility. The website you are talking about already exists, though it does not provides every feature you imagined.

If any of you wishes to improve the Get Involved page, please go ahead and write new articles or improve existing ones :) Joerg and I have limited time and we can't really organize everything Tuxfan imagined, but if people wish to help us...

3dwarehouse:
Regarding the race screen, there are two options: The old style and the new so-called "Minimal GUI" (IIRC). The latter isn't completely finished yet; and I think it isn't decided yet either which of them to use.
And in the menu, e.g. the challenge list needs some more love. If you won most of the challenges it's very hard to find a certain one. It would be really nice to have some icons there identifying what that challenge is about.

Whats wrong with this? I know there was some complications with it but I would love a new speedometer.

well as far as I know it was never finished; the Tux icon was supposed to be changed, and a LED font would need to come with it

1. I could make the LED font easily.
2. On the Challenges room, what are you looking for?

Challenges should eventually be replaced with a "career mode", details are still to be figured out

When do you plan to have story/career mode?
I wish the guy who made it would provide a svg or other editable format.

Sorry, I can't see that happening any time soon. It will be a huge effort to support that, and esp. handling questions and problems. It is certainly way beyond anything that I (and I guess Auria) can support. Also, while a lot of tweaking can be done, there isn't really that much that could be done as a kind of community challenge.

With the upcoming news server we can point people to our web page. It would also be interesting once we start to give different physical properties to the karts. That would be a great time to get the community involved.

Cheers,

It is mostly done, the only thing missing are indications which kart is affected by something in the minimap (e.g. rotating the icons or so). You can already try the new gui in 0.7.1 - and imho for split screen this is _much_ better already.

I really, really miss the speedometer in the Minimal GUI. Instead of having such a big map I would like it more to have a speedometer somewhere.
Also, I liked the messages introduced in 0.7. IMHO it's a pity that they are disappearing again. :(

Just select the normal race gui (which should be the default anyway), and you are good to go. For now I'll leave both race GUIs in, am actually working on a bigger patch to make them a bit easier to maintain.

I like that very much. It fits very well with the nitrometer/boostmeter but I am wondering how it displays the current speed? Only digital?
