Desura client might get GPLed & Linux client out of Beta

Desura client might get GPLed & Linux client out of Beta

Postby Julius » 10 Nov 2011, 11:37

Really great potential news on the Desura front:

Only the client side of things, but it still would allow for a much better support in FOSS projects.

Oh and the Linux client is out of the semi closed Beta and can be used by everyone :)

Just an update here, their entire client got open sourced as Desurium

Pretty cool, wish the FOSS game managers like DJL would have sticked around, but I guess making money from something increases its staying power.

Now, can we push to have FOSS games listed on there? There are a few there already (the forum's RedEclipse, even) but there are a lot of commercial grade games (Wesnoth, Spring, Teeworlds, Tuxcart) that have been left out.

I say we approach the devs and get them to support the platform

Well, RE seems to have been put up by the Desura team and it's main developer doesn't have updating access (but also doesn't seem particulary interested in getting it either). Alien Arena on the other hand seems to have switched to binary releases over Desura only (Linux version is otherwise only available as source version it seems) which is probably a good way to go about supporting all the different linux versions with binary releases.
