Open Source VR games and projects?

Doesn't too much VR still make people feel sick? I think that might be it rather than just the cost.

You know what I would like to see open source? One of those exercise bikes with the 3d levels you can bike on, and the intensity varies depending on if you are on a hill or not. (ok, its just an exercise bike with a screen, and varying difficulty that corresponds to the game. Something like this.

https://expresso.com/Learn/Experience/Games

Now, I'm just dying to make levels, and somehow add my out-of-place 2d art to it along with some surprises. Get the exercise and gaming done in one go.

I don't know WTF "high-intensity interval training" is supposed to be. I'd rather just hit the gym and do the pec machine and dumbbells. Exercise bikes are for the weak.

Still looks cool though.

I agree with you Jastiv. One of my thoughts is that the new bike sensors are bluetouch so maybe you could interface them with a linux computer. I want to have handle bar movement as well but not sure what solution for that. I keep wondering if I should try to get the scouts to do that next.

Also looks like Google fully open sourced their old AndroidVR 3dof system.

Oh, I missed that there is also a Quake2 Occulus Quest port now:
https://github.com/DrBeef/Quake2Quest

From the same guy that did the Darkplaces Quake1 port to the Quest, so it is probably quite playable.

Still talking to mostly to myself here (and since my hacked together DaydreamVR setup stopped working with a LinageOS update I also don't have a working VR headset anymore), but I recently came across some cool projects.

This is a open source Beat Saber like game that uses WebXR:
https://github.com/supermedium/moonrider
(Should work nicely with the actually really usable Firefox Reality browser Edit: currently only works in Chromium due to WebXR switch)

There is also the Love2D inspired LoVR game framework:
https://lovr.org/
https://github.com/bjornbytes/lovr

Oh and it looks like OpenXR support is coming to Blender3D:

Sadly very slim right now (in open-source. The Valve Index and the HTC Vive work with Steam on GNU/Linux more or less)

There is http://www.openhmd.net/ but that is not super usable AFAIK. Edit: but this looks promising: https://invidio.us/watch?v=S11-CFaHjeo

There is some stuff cooking via the OpenXR standard, but I don't think anything fully open-source that is usable. Edit: see https://monado.dev/

Otherwise Google made their Cardboard system for Android fully open-source and it might be possible to get it running on a fully FOSS Android. But that is really the lowest end. I wish they would at least also open-source their Daydream system now that they also abandoned it.

Oh and this seems to be updated again:

(But for now depends on the closed source TrinusVR mobile client)

FTEQW is being ported to OpenXR. Nothing usable yet, but awesome if that works out.

The id software game Return to Castle Wolfenstein is being ported to the Quest and should show up on DrBeef's github soon: https://github.com/DrBeef

Mozilla is slashing large parts of it's XR workforce (sad news), but it appears they plan to continue with Hubs (their social VR spaces app), but as a revenue generating activity, so I am somewhat cautious how that will develop. Right now it is fully FOSS (and will probably stay so), but they are already making it unnecessarily difficult to figure out how to self-host it. So that has all the markings of a open-core strategy :(
But on their Youtube channel they recently posted some nice streams on how to make avatars and stages for Hubs in Blender3D: https://www.youtube.com/c/MozillaMixedReality/

Oh and another somewhat related fun new app: https://github.com/chxrlt/lyrebird
An open-source Linux voice changer, which I believe is the first FOSS app for live voice modification that can be used in game or VR voice chats.

Edit: oh and an article on the difficulties to get desktop VR working on Linux: https://www.gamingonlinux.com/2020/08/m ... r-on-linux
I hear through that with a AMD GPU and the open-source drivers it is pretty easy.
