Call for testing: Implementation of a new UI theme

Postby QwertyChouskie » 28 Mar 2020, 04:27

Almost 2 years after https://forum.freegamedev.net/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=7974, the new skin based on the modern icon style is now ready for some wider testing. If you want to help out, it's pretty simple:

1. Make sure you are running a build of STK from git, as 1.1 is missing a bit of supporting code for button padding.
2. Join an empty server, then paste this in the chat box and it Enter:

{l Code}: {l Select All Code}
/installaddon https://jacobspctuneup.tk/STK/modern.zip

3. Go into Options -> Interface, and change Skin to "Modern" (ideas for a better name welcome)

From there, just use STK! If/when you notice any issues (spacing problems, bad/unclear icons, anything really), post them here so I can get everything polished up nice.

So what do you all think? Looking good or needing more work? This has been a long time in the making, let's make sure it's as good as it can possibly be. :)

I really like this skin it looks fantastic and I couldn't notice any big issues.

Just one really small one:
The style of the question mark changes when you play a track without screenshot.

Noted. Looks like an STK bug (not loading the themed icon), will track it down and get it fixed. :)

I was a bit skeptical about this new UI design at first but I tried it in the game now and it really looks awesome. Great work!!

I've seen a bit more of the skin through 1.2 RC videos. The theme is nice!

One possible improvement might be to make the color less intense on value boxes (such as number of karts, etc.) to add contrast to the black-color text in it and the two arrow buttons. I'm not sure if this should also be done for checkboxes or not.

The modern theme looks fantastic now that I got it to work again :)

The only thing I'd like to suggest is that the in-game icons for the items stay the same as in the normal theme. It's for the simple reason that the non-angular item icons (swatter, bowling ball, etc.) look exactly the same as the items when they're used. So, if you use a swatter, it jumps from the top of the screen on the back of your car, etc. You can see it's the exact same thing. But with the modern item icons, they don't really correspond to the actual items in such a straightforward way.

Anyway, I still love the modern ui :)
