Hi. I'm Digit... and it boggles my mind that I'm not already on this forum.

Long time pioneer-space-sim enthusiast, seen from time to time on the irc chan.

got poor programming aptitude, and underused artistic aptitude. hopefully some day i'll manage to find the time and energy to prioritize making some stuff for pioneer... got spaceship ideas in mind... like, i do miss the boa (and others) from frontier: first encounters. ;) and maybe some day i'll get rich enough to pour money towards pioneer developers too. *dreamer*

Hey, my name Graham Wilson and I have been making free software games (as Piga Software) on and off for fifteen years. Nothing major or terribly polished I will admit, and my output has slowed in the past few years due to moving on to more ambitious projects and having less free time (and being more interested in computer animation than video game programming these days, though there is still cross-over). Mostly I am coming onto here to try and get more feedback and motivation to work on projects, since otherwise I am mostly just bouncing ideas around off myself.

Welcome Christoph. To get an answer on STK/Xbox controller problem, you will probably need to post on the STK forum here. I don't have Windows 10 nor an Xbox controller. I don't think I've even used a controller with STK.

Welcome Mena. Do you have any programming experience? What kind of game do you envision creating?

Digit, I too am boggled why you haven't sooner. Even if we have never met. :)

Welcome Nick. Do you have a particular type of game you are interested in?

Welcome Graham. I like your pig avatar. I haven't gotten a chance to try any of your projects yet but it is something I hope to get to.

Welcome residente. STK is popular on these boards. If you ever get interested in making your own games, feel free to post about it. There are other racing games that are posted here which might be an interest. If you prefer destroying your opponents in battle over racing, there are those kinds of games in development too.

Welcome mike. Not many Unity users here. While you can release your code under a free software/open source license, the game will still require the proprietary Unity engine.

Welcome richard. Are you working on a game project? What type of games are you interested in?

My brother made it in Corel Draw for Windows 3.1.1. when he was ten based on a childhood toy that was meant to be a dog toy.

EDIT: And for any of my projects I would particularly recommend, it would be my 2016 update to Piga's Santa Drop Down (even if it is out of season). The others could really use an update (I have been meaning to port Windys to Gambas 3 with a new engine for years). My brother's adventure game, Alexei: Part IX, is also a neat if unambitious little adventure game.

Hi, I'm looking for games that have a free license. When I joined just now, the board informed me:

Works for me.

Guess that's my fault, I tend to put a lot of people on ignore lists when my blood pressure goes up, which is something that happens to me a lot in Diaspora discussions. I unblocked you -_-

Welcome harveyclayton. What type of game are you interested in making? Have you tried looking to see if there is an open source game that you might be able to contribute to?

What about you freemedia2018? Any projects you are involved in?

Welcome Oliver Moss. Looking at how your username has nothing to do with your name, I wonder if we should have a thread for people to explain their usernames (if they want). Any way are you working on any games? Does any project pique your interest to perhaps help with?

Creating lifeboats for the FSF (very unofficially I might add) and trying to make it easier to learn to code.

I realise that for quite a few people, it is already easy enough. And on the super-easy side of things, Logo is definitely easy enough. Only problem with Logo is that it's not always practical enough, it worked extremely well in an age where people were fascinated with anything a computer could do at all, It's undeniably successful when people want to move a cartoon cat around, but if that doesn't "feel like coding" then there's only so much it can do a lot of the time.

I'm not-- and it wouldn't. I spend a lot of time talking about how the FSF is floundering. They're the best free software organisation for a reason, but they've lost a lot of ground and seem to be going in circles. http://techrights.org/2019/06/30/emergent-and-growing-threats-to-free-sw/

I took a look at that article and a few more from the site. I don't find it's content very compelling. The writer comes off as paranoid to me. He has articles complaining about Greg K-H and his Microsoft associations and an article about people trying to associate him with Russia. Obviously it isn't the exact same as Greg K-H has more associations with Microsoft than the writer has links to Russia but the level of malice he attributes to actions is too high for me.

Perhaps. There are several reasons I invest time in Techrights, but let's take a quick look at how such a website came into existence:

The first thing to consider is the origins. As far as I can tell, TR is heavily influenced by the existence and demise of Groklaw, a valuable website covering efforts by Microsoft and others to defeat free software with patent aggression. If you're not well-acquainted with the leaked memos from Redmond on this and related subjects, Microsoft acknowledged FLOSS as a serious threat as early as 1998 (also the year OSI was founded) and has since spun idea after idea to attack it, generally through proxies. Techrights started as BoycottNovell, as Novel was one of the proxies Microsoft was using to destroy (among other things) Sun Microsystems and Java.

Java of course, is not destroyed. It is so general-purpose that killing it in several areas has left it extremely useful in others. But Sun is no more. Obviously, a good part of that is the fault of Sun. GKH worked for Novell when it was getting Microsoft money, whether there is any connection there (none that I know of) he is far less sympathetic to the causes Linux has helped and when Linus steps down, things are going to be very different with GKH at the helm.

Speaking of which, the Linux trademark is now controlled by a foundation run by a Windows user, and they have put someone from Microsoft in close to where Zemlin is. This has also happened at Apache, and it happened prior to part of Nokia being gutted by someone who left MSFT, joined Nokia, gutted it and returned to MSFT who were then able to get it more cheaply. How that is even legal is boggling. I personally predicted that Red Hat would be purchased "next" a few months prior to it happening, though thankfully my favourite person there has since resigned. The purchase of GitHub really SHOULD make people paranoid, but the main thing that's going to happen is it's going to be used to funnel awareness (marketing) of Non-free software over the free software titles that relied on it before the merger.

Watching a 20-year-long game of corporate chess is boring to many people, but that is the game TR has covered since 2006. The lead writer is several things: 1. a medical researcher with a doctorate whose company works with the NHS, 2. a software developer 3. an avid football fan, and wild speculation in sports about players and teams and ref calls is common.

However, the industry people who used to leak to Groklaw did not merely disappear when Groklaw folded. Microsoft and Apple treat shill journalists at shill outlets just like the OEMs-- the two-tier system for press releases keeps most people obedient and less critical, while those with a penchant for actual journalism are denied access and generally let go by companies who want to report on these companies easily and routinely.

A lot of what goes onto the website is gleaned from public articles that are quickly forgotten in the endless churn of marketing and noise-- while a fair amount of the "paranoia" is simply reporting from the "inside" that the monopolies are working to silence with new laws and lobbying.

So, I mean, dismiss him if you like. But even if you find the stories (many of which are only readily accessible to people in the industries mentioned, in terms of style and content-- though an increasing number are easy for users and free sw developers to relate to) a bit frayed at the edges, if you find a string and tug on it for long enough, you'll find the sum to be thickly and tightly woven.

One of the deciding factors in my evaluation wasn't first impressions, but finding out just who takes TR seriously. As for the topics and corruption that led to the founding of the website, you used to (under a slightly different board of directors) find more critiques and rants like his, from the likes of OSI presidents recent and founding-- and even the OSI website itself. The OSI board has swept much of that away, at a time when Microsoft is giving them more and more money.

"Everyone has a price," fluffrabbit says. Not everyone, but an increasing number of key people-- I intend to stay informed about these chess moves as much as possible-- I consider the future (and present) of GNU/Linux at stake. I've spent the past 5 years doing my own research about it. I sometimes contribute to Techrights myself. Of course I don't expect to change your mind, I thought I'd mention it anyway.

If you look at the writings on the site, he seems to have decided that Microsoft and Novell are bad companies and cannot change. I understand Microsoft in particular has done awful things but corporate bankruptcy seems unlikely. Shouldn't we encourage them to change.

The article links to http://techrights.org/2019/06/13/a-line-in-the-sand/ which in turn links to another post. What do those articles tell you? LibrePlanet has a Code of Conduct. RMS didn't like it. What is the Code of Conduct? What did RMS disagree with? I don't know because the articles have very little details. The author seems to think any restriction of speech is bad. If someone wanted to give an offensive racist speech at LibrePlanet, he would be ok with it? For Linus Torvads, it's not that Microsoft sudden stepped in and said his behavior is bad and needed to change. People have been commenting on the toxic culture of the kernel community for a long time. Being considerate to others does not corrupt the development process.

You're free to keep reading him but I don't find the content as well researched as you say. I had complaints about most of the articles I looked at.

How do you suggest encouraging a company to change, which bought off the DOJ and continues to lobby against user rights in as many countries as it can?

What would we do to encourage them that hasn't already been tried?

dulsi {l Wrote}:Being considerate to others does not corrupt the development process.

The real problem is that the accusations against RMS were largely unsubstantiated, and exaggerated to try to stifle his participation in an event created by his own organisation. Meanwhile, Red Hat has a code of conduct, but its owners still won't apologise for their active role in the Holocaust (While Bayer apologised, IBM has not.) I don't think double standards can get much worse than that, the world is pretty much upside down at this point.
