Divide classes by rank

Postby dumaosen » 07 Jul 2019, 04:07

There is a popular game called Arena of Valor (?) and it also have rank system.
But they divided players by rank like "Bronze III" "Sliver I" "Sliver II" which can show the player's game skill more clearly and make rank easy to remember.
Let's divide like this:
Bronze I:<2250
Bronze II:2250~2499
Bronze III:2500~2749
Bronze IV:2750~2999
Copper I:3000~3249
Copper II:3250~3499
Copper III:3500~3749
Copper IV:3750~3999
Silver I:4000~4249
Silver II:4250~4499
Silver III:4500~4749
Silver IV:4750~4999
Gold I:5000~5249
Gold II:5250~5499
Gold III:5500~5749
Gold IV:5750~5999
Platinum I:6000~6499
Platinum II:6500~6999
Platinum III:7000~7499
Platinum IV:7500~7999
SuperTux:>=8000
Also we should make icons for that.

A simple way would to be to display cup-*.png (bronze/silver/gold/platinum) next to the player's name wherever it appears.

I find all these metal names unnecessary if not misleading.

IMO 17 classes is a bit overkill, but maybe have 5: Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Top 10. (I think Trackmania Nations does it similarly.) This way your average player, who is not familiar with the rank number and how good a player it indicates, can easily tell how they are ranked and how others they are playing against are ranked.

The top 10 idea made me think of percentiles, but those are useless. Out of 2625 people having played at least one ranked race ; only 380 are over 3000 and 171 over 4000. And within the top 26, the gap is huge.

It would be possible to do a simple mapping : >6000 platinum ; >4500 gold ; >3000 silver ; <3000 bronze ; but I'm not convinced this would do much to help a player situate his own level.

In the end, I find the argument that people are too dumb to understand the numbers weak. Sure, someone doing his first race has no idea what 2000 or 3000 is worth. But is it different from someone first stumbling into a game with various metal names ? If someone tells me he has a "gold 2" rating in some multiplayer game, I'm entirely at loss to tell what's his percentile, just how much top players trashes him and how much this player trashes newbies. The only inferences I can easily make is that the player is about equally matched with players of his own tier. For chess, raw numerical elo ratings are used, and though the common players wouldn't be able to tell you how it translates to winning chances, they have a rough and good enough idea.

Designing a system so that someone discovering it the first time and not reading up on it or just playing some time with it understand it is overambitious.

One potential idea would be to display somewhere in the UI expected winning chances for the player against another (based on own rating and the other player's rating) ?

"It would be possible to do a simple mapping : >6000 platinum ; >4500 gold ; >3000 silver ; <3000 bronze"

IMO this would be quite nice. For one, it's easier to tell how good the players currently in a given server are at a glance than looking at a 6-digit number. Also, leveling up to the next level, e.g. Bronze->Silver, show a "You leveled up!" dialog, which might motivate players to continue playing ranked races. Also, with a trophy you can easily put it in a column in the players list in-server.

Obviously rank numbers wouldn't be removed, but having an "at-a-glance" indicator of skill would be nice.

Hi friend! Good idea, i'm in Gold I. But, as QwertyChouskie said, it'll be better with "Bronze", "Silver", "Gold", "Platinum" only.

It seems a bit too much like bragging to me.

On the other hand, STK could make some money on this: When you earn a metal medal, you get the right to purchase an original STK T-shirt displaying your racing name, your favorite kart, your medal, your points, your worldwide rank, personally signed by your developer of choice... for just 100 euros! :D

You could also sell certified T-shirts commemorating epic racing victories, like me beating Andet that one time! :D :D :D

So, yeah, bragging is a good thing, I guess...
