possible? the add-ons tracks in reverse?

Postby Maximiliano Fonseca » 14 May 2019, 15:55

Hello :-)

I love playing the tracks in reverse, and I suggest that the complementary tracks work in reverse Cocoa temple was a track that from 0.9 was not playable in reverse mode but in 0.9.3 it was achieved.

it will be possible to play the add-on tracks in reverse?

Many addon tracks can already be played in reverse, though not all of them. Just for the fun of it, here is a breakdown of addon tracks I have installed:

Reversible:
  • Amazonian Journey
  • Art Museum
  • Bovine Barnyard
  • City Lights
  • Down by the River
  • Green Hill
  • Green Valley
  • Las Dunas Stadium
  • Lost Chasm
  • Lost Speedway
  • magic cross
  • Nolok's Factory
  • Shiny Suburbs
  • Subsea
  • The Cube
  • The Island
Non-Reversible:
  • Alpine-2
  • beehive (beta)
  • China
  • Classic Subsea
  • Classic Tollway
  • Coyote Canyon
  • Industry
  • Lava Fields
  • Mystery Island
  • Old Crescent Crossing
  • Old Math Class
  • Old Traditional Shifting Sands
  • On an Iceberg
  • Scary Swamp
  • Secret Garden
  • Skyline
  • Tux Tollway
  • Valley House

This has to be enabled by the addon creator. But you can enable this for yourself locally if you go to the addons folder and in the folder for the track edit the file track.xml and change reverse from "N" to "Y" or add the whole reverse="Y" if it is missing (maybe you also need to increase the version number for that to work, just compare with tracks where reverse is working)

But some tracks may not be possible in reverse, e.g. they have a jump that is only possible in one direction.

It's on the list above. And it has a slope that is problematic to take in the opposite direction. It can be done with acceleration, but AI karts and inexperienced players would very likely fail there. So for the track to be truly playable in reverse, the simple change in the text file won't do.

It is interesting to see that many of the non-reversible tracks can certainly be driven backwards on any difficulty, so it is more likely to be an accident rather than intentional decision. If I am not mistaken, the 'reverse' checkbox is off by default in the editor. I think it should be on my default.
If some of the creators of those tracks are still active in the community, it would be good to ask them to change it (or even just to ask for their permission and do it ourselves. It is usually as simple as checking a box). As Mr.XX99 said, it can be changed manually using the track.xml file, but I don't know what would happen if you tried to use that in online play.
