LibreGameWiki constant vandalism

LibreGameWiki constant vandalism

Postby drummyfish » 24 Dec 2018, 12:27

Hello,

there are topic about this already, but nothing much happening, so I feel I should start a new thread to revive discussion about the issue.

Someone has a script set up to vandalise LibreGameWiki even several times a day, for several months now. It messes up the game articles and game tables. This is pretty bad because there's not many alternative pages like that. Free culture suffers.

It would be pretty easy to stop this by disallowing anonymous edits, or adding captchas for these, or something like that. I haven't been able to find out who the admins are. How can we make this happen?

Thank you helping out :-)

I've never really been involved with LGW, so I can't really give an answer here.

I would love a catch all solution for the forums and wiki... a site that combined the 2 in a user friendly way and made it easy to add new projects and some kind of general counter spam measure.

Thanks for being the only person to at least answer. I have raised this issue at several pages at LGW as well, including the admin's talk page, with no response, even though he seems to manually edit things every once in a few days. I really believe disallowing anonymous edits would be all it would take. I have no idea why no one cares.

So all in all I created my own bot that now reverts all edits by that poor insecure weirdo that's dong the attacks. Seems to be working pretty well for now.

Thank you very much for creating a bot to combat the vandal, drummyfish! :) I just recently went and checked, and LGW is looking much better these days. I was trying to manually combat the attacker myself a few months ago, but an automated solution like yours was really what was needed. I am in 100% agreement that preventing anonymous edits would be a more permanent solution to this problem.

This has inspired me to start editing LGW wiki again :)

I'm so glad to hear this, really, thank you.

Don't tell anyone but the attacks have stopped shortly after I put the bot up. It looks like the attacker was watching and saw it was no longer worth it. Let's see if it stays this way.

I was really frustrated but now I'm motivated to improve the wiki as well. I keep editing it every day, it has become my new hobby.

Should you ever do decide to host an alternate wiki I'd love to see a tagging system for games instead of a genre list like LGW has. Most games don't fit into one singular genre and to be honest the genres LGW has listed don't make much sense to me. Tags would also allow to search for things other than genre like gamepad support, licensing, different game modes etc.

Both Hubzilla (social.freegamedev.net) and Kanboard (kanboard.freegamedev.net; not yet live) have an integrated basic wiki, but I don't think it would make much sense to migrate any of the existing wikis there.
