Is this sprites legal?

Is this sprites legal?

Postby fervi » 15 Oct 2017, 23:39

Hello. I'm sorry for a bit of a misunderstanding, but I do not know how to write :P

My graphic designer created graphics for the game. The game was supposed to be sold, but taxes in the state prevented such things. I decided to release the game on Open Source licenses.

The problem is that I suspect the graphics are not fully "free". I would like you to see and to know whether they may have been borrowed and modified.

If you are not afraid of binary files:

Sprites:

Thanks for reply! And if possible - please provide feedback.

What do you base your suspicion on?

Look like alien (from movie)

Some sprites are unsharpened

Of course this cross is only a cross, and Troglodyte looks like Alien (but i didn't find exacly copy), but maybe more graphs are like a "stolen"

There is a broad spectrum of inspired by to a strait rip, but I agree that cross should make you suspicious. Did you do some reverse image searching on google:
https://images.google.com/

Ultimately though, if you don't have clear proof and you think most of it is original: just release it with a disclaimer and if someone complains, remove the art in question. This is of course not 100% risk free, but what in life is... (and I know I am probably going to get some flak for this advise from the "purists" ;) ).

I'm concerned about the very uneven quality levels. The cards with abstract symbols look amateurish, but the cards with character silhouettes look great. Unfortunately reverse image search doesn't help as it's easily thwarted by recolourings - if plagiarised, the original may not have been a silhouette, for example.

Which really goes to show you need to get artists who you can trust, or who can explain where they got their source material.

Yhm, the engine in "demo version" is ready, but now I need f ... sprites. Ech

Maybe later I get more energy to find someone to help

Thanks anyway!

Just go to http://www.opengameart.org and get spirtes from there. There's thousands!

PS. To get help you need to be more specific. Post in 'Showcase & Collaboration' and elaborate on your project; links, screenshots, description etc.
