HELP WANTED! Leaf images in our style

HELP WANTED! Leaf images in our style

Postby J_128 » 08 Jul 2016, 17:22

Requesting leaf images in true SuperTux style.

Leaf images wanted for a new particle system: Autumn Leaves

This particle system will be predominantly for levels made with the Forest tileset, and will appear as leaves randomly drifting down, much the same way the Snow particle system acts.

Hi, i could help you. Just let me know what the leafs are supposed to look like exactly. What size does the graphic need to have. Do you got any reference material?

You can look at our data repository for inspiration of graphics: https://github.com/supertux/data. Size: I guess at least 32 px by 32 px, but larger wouldn't hurt I guess since you can downscale. It's important to draw in SuperTux style, I guess the most accurate description of that can be found at http://pingus.seul.org/~grumbel/gimp/drawing/.

Important too: of course the graphics must be in an open source license (CC0, CC-BY-SA 4.0 Intl., CC-BY 4.0 Intl., or similar).

Yes, one file per leaf. And yes, Autumn colors. :)

Hey, so: We want to use the leaves in our forest world. A screenshot of that world can be found here: https://supertuxproject.org/images/supertux-0.3.0-4.jpg

Just in case you need any pointers. They should look good with that background.

Hi guys, here is a link to an xcf-file (gimp). It contains six leafs in three color variations - 64x64px. Let me know if it matches the criteria.

Hey, nice job! Those leaves look great! (I think, anyway. :) )
These should work fine (IF the SuperTux dev team likes them ;) )

They look pretty good. Can you please make them all individual .pngs for easy access and viewing?

All the leaves in an individual png-file thanks to the gimp-plugin-export-layers.

They look nice, but I'm still a bit unsure if they fit in the game. Maybe it's the lack of an appropriate background (only green trees in the background), tho.

What license?

CC BY-SA 3.0/4.0, or a less restrictive copyfree license.

So lets say i go for CC BY-SA 4.0 how do i apply a license? In the file itself?

We would likely be documenting the license in our AUTHORS file here:
https://github.com/SuperTux/data/blob/master/AUTHORS

Furthermore, we'll also add you to the SuperTux credits.

You just state your file(s) is/are under license XYZ (insert the actual license here). In this case the pngs, and the XCF should be under the same license, I guess. We will then, as @Tobbi said, add a remark to our sources who created the file and what license it is under. Additionally, you should probably be added to the credits in the game.

If you've got time, and are interested, you could also have a look at creating a background in autumn style. They could be similar to the current forest backgrounds, https://raw.githubusercontent.com/SuperTux/data/master/images/background/forest1.jpg, https://raw.githubusercontent.com/SuperTux/data/master/images/background/forest2.jpg, https://raw.githubusercontent.com/SuperTux/data/master/images/background/forest2_para.png, https://raw.githubusercontent.com/SuperTux/data/master/images/background/forest_para2.png, https://raw.githubusercontent.com/SuperTux/data/master/images/background/forest_para3.png, and https://raw.githubusercontent.com/SuperTux/data/master/images/background/forest_para3_bottom.png.

i hope that'll do. Since i am new to the supertux universe i still don't know exactly how backgrounds work. From what i could see in the new level-editor is that they are split in three parts. Is that the case with the forest/automn style backgrounds too?

i edited the meta-data using exiftool and updated the leaves.zip.
https://www.dropbox.com/s/gbwrq52pcyuy2 ... x.zip?dl=0

exiftool is a command line tool: http://www.sno.phy.queensu.ca/~phil/exiftool/
for those who might need to add an artist name and a copyright note: exiftool -artist="your name" -Copyright="CC BY-SA 4.0" *.png

Hey, i was wondering if the coins were meant to be yellow?
I tweaked the sprites a bit to be golden and shiny.
What do you guys think?
