Music to be Added/Replaced?

Music to be Added/Replaced?

Postby 0zone0ne » 19 Nov 2013, 06:49

Hello everybody...

Topic title is pretty explanatory, I'm just wondering if there's anything you need added or replaced in the music department (possibly by the next release). If so, hopefully I can help out without making everybody too upset. I have a short mental list of locations in the game where I think the current music doesn't really fit or needs replacing.
I also think I could make the game's music more recognisable, and give it a specific feel. This would include, for example, a more specific sound palette or genre which would still be easy for other musicians to replicate in order to make music for this game.

For the sake of quick examples I'm currently working on a theme for Shifting Sands, a replacement for my old overworld theme (I feel like I've improved a heap since I made that), and a possible replacement for Harvest, since it's apparently getting a revamp.

I hate it too. The one from Auria was much better!

modz {l Wrote}:i think old mine music should be replaced

I think it fits to an old mine :) .

Good idea. I think it would be possible, but there should be add-on-dependecies too to manage that. Info on that is here: http://forum.freegamedev.net/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=4930

I would focus on those :

* Lighthouse
* Snow Peak
* Shifting sands (current is not bad, but doesn't sound that egyptian)

-Imagining music for the Lighthouse seems a bit awkward to me, because I don't really have any existing themes (as such with Shifting Sands or Snow Peak) to build from. Do you have any suggestions about the way this should sound? It may be easier in this case for me to go in a random direction and see what I end up with.
-Snow Peak should be relatively straightforward.
-Because I've already started Shifting Sands I'll post it in its present state below. Helpful feedback is welcome, although keep in mind that it's not finished yet. :)

Nice start with the egyptian song!

For lighthouse, since the theme is sea, and it's raining, I would go for 'sailor's music', maybe like https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0KyEM-_bgN0 or https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3q1TXcbfj74 (perhaps a little less happy since, after all, it's raining ^^ ) or https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ghyOye3 ... 437B638831

This is just an idea, feel free to provide more ideas

Egyptian theme is great, love it :)
I sounds a bit "retro" too, but that's cool for me. Remembers me of Crash Bandicoot 3's music when in Egyptian levels :)
What do you use to make those songs?

On Snow Peak song: there is also the possibility of directly borrowing from Tux Racer/Extreme Tux Racer. The songs there are great, and they manage to keep a coherence between the (I think) 3 songs in the game, plus that would be kind of a reference between the projects :)

Music from the early Crash Bandicoot games is actually a big inspiration for me. :D

What do you use to make those songs?
GarageBand 6.0.5 and a lot of custom samples.

That's a pretty cool idea, although maybe a remix would better than directly copying the music across. ;)

I was just dissecting the race theme from Extreme Tux Racer. The main melody would seem to be atonal, so it may be difficult for me to write a decent remix of it.

To be clear, we're both speaking of this one right?
The melody isn't atonal, though a bit elaborate IMO :)
I can give you the chords if that helps?
How would you imagine the remix, what would you change?

Yeah, that's the one. I'm sorry, atonal really wasn't the right word, but I seriously can't tell what key it's actually in. Knowing the chord structure would be really helpful. :)
Basically I'm planning to have it start off sounding like an original song, and about halfway though the music would modulate to its relative key and turn into a remix of the Tux Racer "theme". Right now i'm thinking it would mainly be variations of the melody at 00:37, with some other random stuff thrown in.

The key seems to be C#, but the tonic seems to change from major to minor.
Some musician here who can explain and name this feature?

Sauer >> this is right indeed, I'm actually having a hard time to get the exact chords, as several seem to fit...
Also, original tracker files are here: http://tuxracer.cvs.sourceforge.net/vie ... ata/music/
But you need Impulse Tracker: http://www.users.on.net/~jtlim/ImpulseT ... nload.html (for MS-DOS...)
I managed to get IT to run in DosBOX but didn't get any sound and I'm not even sure if it works correctly...(doesn't work with Win7)

Thanks, but I prefer MilkyTracker (looks like FastTracker 2), which supports the four defacto standard tracking formats as well.
Of which part exactly do you need the chords?

For now, just the 3 - 4 chords that back the melody at 00:37.

I think the chords for the theme at the end of the song are C#M, C#M, EM, F#M, is this what you want?

Sauer2 >> Thanks, I will try MilkyTracker (I admit I never used a tracker at all, I'm quite curious :))

To ease the pain, I suggest you switch off the splash screen (config->misc->other->show splashscreen[ ]) and also disable hexadecimal numbers (config->layout->pattern editor->Hex count [ ]).

About samples and instruments: Each instrument contains a sample.
Sample: A part of a sound. Can be a complete sound like a drum sample but also a small part which sounds like a sine wave when looped. How to loop or not can be edited in the sample editor.
Instrument: A way to control the sample somewhat more, like the length, panning and volume of the looped sound, repetitions and small sound effects like vibrato (which is extremely used in BOOM-BOOM-BOOM).

Also, fast introduction to all the numbers in the patterns:
Unbenannt.png
tone
Unbenannt.png (400 Bytes) Viewed 27729 times

White: The key. A rectangle in this position means: Stop this tone.
Blue: The instrument number.
The best way to insert new tones is either learning all the keyboard shortcuts or using that piano from the instrument edit view.

Green: The volume number, I guess.
Red/Violet: Effect ID. Please consult the user manual. :p 1 and 2 is pitching, btw.
Orange/Yellowish: Value of the effect.

Thanks for the information :)

I managed to open the song (my download was actually corrupted) both in MilkyTracker and in Impulse Tracker (through DOSBox), but Impulse Tracker reads the song too slowly...anyway.
I'll try to understand it now :)

Note on MilkyTracker: raaaah that non-resizeable window!! :'(
