SuperTuxKart 0.8.1 - Release Candidate 1

SuperTuxKart 0.8.1 - Release Candidate 1

Postby hiker » 18 Nov 2013, 07:12

Hi all,

we finally have a first release candidate for 0.8.1 ready. Major changes:

    * New track "STK Enterprise"
    * Updated track "The Old Mines", "Lighthouse", "Zen Garden"
    * New Soccer mode
    * New Egg Hunt mode
    * New karts Xue and Sara
    * Updated Beastie kart
    * Wiimote support
    * Added Tutorial
    * Added new Supertux difficulty
    * New bubblegum shield weapon
    * New Speeodmeter and nitro meter
    * Add ability to filter addons
    * Updated nitro models
    * Add ability to save and resume Grand Prix
    * Improve skid marks and nitro effects

Installers for Windows and OSX are available from our SF download page. We are still waiting for a linux executable, which should hopefully be ready tomorrow.

Feedback as always is welcome. A lot has changed internally (e.g. we are all now using cmake to build executables, we have switched from Visual Studio 2008 to Visual Studio 2012), so please let us know of any problems you encounter (and also if everything just works for you). Especially experience and feedback for the new wiimote support would be important. Note that there are technical problems with supporting the new wiimotes with builtin motion-plus - some work, some don't. Unfortunately we don't have access to one of the non-working wiimotes to fix this (and even if we had, there are apparently problems with Window's bluetooth drivers, which make a fix for this unlikely). Additional information about connecting a wiimote to SuperTuxKart are on web page.

Cheers,
Joerg

Hiker, I added WIIUSE_WIIMOTE_MOTION_PLUS_INSIDE to be able to see which type of wiimote is connected, we could display a message saying that those ones are partially supported (when detected) -> i.e only buttons work...
But anyway, if people try to connect using 1+2 they won't manage to connect at all...
And yeah I know, string freeze done, etc...

BTW, congrats for the RC :)
And Linux exe? Don't you make a sourc package instead?

No, it should work on all systems (though I have only tested 64-bit Windows 7 and a 32-bit Windows Vista).

What exactly does 'not work' mean? Did you get a window and loading screen? Or just the terminal window? Or did it crash when you tried a race? Or nothing at all?

Anyway, could you send/post the file %AppData%/supertuxkart/stdout.log?

Just had a quick go of this & saw a few errors in the console that might be of interest. Game didn't crash or anything bad.

Edit: the directory it is looking for things in isn't on my computer, my system user name isn't 'christian' & the game isn't loaded from Desktop directoy.

FYI that's the name of the guy creating the Linux binary. Related to that: the binary crashes for me in a fresh Ubuntu 12.04 VM with this error:

Well I looked in appData but can't find supertuxkart , but maybe because it doesn't even open , because i get a error in installing on my xp , Microsoft visual c ++ 2012 says "can only be installed on windows vista SP2 and newer platforms" , So does it not work with xp ? So i tried it on my windows 7 and it installs it fine but when i open supertuxkart the terminal window comes up but then it crashes , I will try to upload %AppData%/supertuxkart/stdout.log from my windows 7 later , thanks :)

Hi Mr_Spoon,

Do you use a 64-bit Linux system?

Yes, the message should perhaps be removed. Hmm - difficult to say, it could be useful for an artist who uses this binary on the other hand :( Well, we'll think about it.

Regarding the messages about missing textures otherwise: those appear to come all from an addon track, which is kind of out of our control. But we should remove some of the unnecessary warnings.

Thanks a lot!

Hi,

thanks for the report. We were not aware of any restrictions about XP :(

I've quickly created a new installer, which appears to work in XP. At the moment this version does not support wiimote yet, I'll try to fix that tonight.

Could you try the new binary 'supertuxkart-0.8.1-rc1-winXP.exe' and let us know if this works? If the windows 7 version crashes in the kart selection screen, try disabling 'FBO' in the graphical settings. Otherwise, let us know the details as posted earlier ;)

Thanks a lot!

Mmmh, I've tested a lot the i386 32-bit binary but I haven't found any problems. I've tested it with Ubuntu 12.10 with Gallium 0.4 and AMD Catalyst drivers. I've also tested it with Debian 6.0.8 and Lubuntu 12.04.3 without any problems. Additionally, I have tested it with another user but it works very well. :think: :think: :think:

I've tested it with Lubuntu 12.04.3/Kernel 3.8.0-25 on VMware. 3D acceleration and sound works very well.

Self compiled from source on Debian Sid and works mostly OKish. For me on first run i got question mark instead of logo and in console it drops that there is no data/gui/logo_broken.png there :think: .

Then i played maybe half of the Story Mode, there are same deprecated texture warnings if that is usefull

But OK, one thing bother me there is no speed nor nitro meter in Minimal Race GUI - is this feature or a missfeature :D .

Also as you see my card does not have npot extension support and i don't like it to see some npot texture out there, actually my driver load them fine but with maybe half or more performance hit - so that is what i don't like. Those are spoted, maybe i missed few :?

I've just added a complete new XP installer (supertuxkart-0.8.1-rc1-winXP-with-wiimote.exe), which also includes wiimote support for XP. I used the (actually very old) VS redistributable which we used in 0.8.

Feedback welcome!

Yes, those warnings are mostly for devs/artists. We have to see if we disable them in 0.8.1.

But OK, one thing bother me there is no speed nor nitro meter in Minimal Race GUI - is this feature or a missfeature :D .

I think we have finally agreed to abandon the mini race gui. For now just switch to the normal GUI. We will likely remove this in the next release (unless we need another RC). While there were a few problems reported here, mostly are build related or warnings, not real blockers ;) Let's hope we will be happy ;)

Also as you see my card does not have npot extension support and i don't like it to see some npot texture out there, actually my driver load them fine but with maybe half or more performance hit - so that is what i don't like. Those are spoted, maybe i missed few :?

Gee, they are back again? I thought we had fixed that all in the previous release :( Well, that's for the artists to take care of ;)

Thanks a lot!

Is this happening only during the end camera, or in normal race as well? We have a ticket for the former.

It could probably happen when you are very slow(?), or perhaps have slowdown item attached?
