2D artist needed for kart icons

2D artist needed for kart icons

Postby samuncle » 29 Sep 2013, 10:24

Hello everybody

As you know supertuxkart 0.8.1 will feature two new character. The xfce's mouse and Princess Sara. Both have an icon but it doesn't fit with other ones.

If you look closely, original icons have the same eyes and they look cartoon.

I don't have time to make them myself (I'm working on the new graphical style for 0.9). So I'm asking to our community if they can do it :).

Thanks in advance,
Sam

I think before someone should start workig on an icon here we need to formalize a style guide line for character icons. So I will start here with a first version. samuncle please give feedback and changes where you see fit.

character style guide line, version 1.0
shapes
  • Avoid to small and insignificant details
  • Shapes should be simplified as appropriate and needed (keep the icon size in mind)
  • Use perspective with care
  • Use thick outlines
colors
  • Colors should be not too bright and dark
  • Avoid too high contrasts
  • Don't shade icons, use plain colors instead
  • Use highlights only for very shiny materials and eyes
  • Don't use color gradients
  • The outline color should be a darker shade of the fill color
If the color is black or a very dark shade of grey, use a ligher shade of it for outlines

EDIT: Added item "Use thick outlines"

I would add to the guidlines : thick outlines. Many people who try to make icons make the mistake of using thin outlines, while they need to be quite thick

Nice start! Maybe the nose is a little too long, in the original her nose is not so pointy. But great start

Hum I prefer the original one. And you forgot the eyes (also in the guidelines). They have all the same eye texture.

Maybe like ludsky's version but a bit more professional :).

Position the eyes more horizontally, and I think we have a winner.

Ludsky {l Wrote}:Other Icon for XFCE's

I would recommend you to make your icons using a vector graphics program like Inkscape. You will get much cleaner lines and are able to tinker with it more easily. If you need help or advice using it just ask. ;)

I have uploaded a Inkscape SVG file with preconfigured grid: http://www.sendspace.com/file/n45425

This is nice Ludsky :).

I've made a version which is 256*256 (It looks like vectorial, it feels like vectorial, it is not: i'm good with gimp not Inkscape ^^)

128*128

  • Don't use color gradients

This rule isn't a good idea imho  , some icons already have gradients.
We should add the rule: All the icons have the same type of eyes.

For sara, betharatux just have to change the eyes. I don't have the original svg file to do it.

Hi Ilpiero,

this is a bit closer to our guidelines :) but there is something a little awkward about your icon. I think it may have to do with her upper lip looking a bit like a mustache ;)

I'm also not sure about the "pie-chart" looking eyes, I think reusing the same eyes as the XFCE mouse just above would work better
