RESOURCE: Help Wanted

quin,
[These pictures are deprecated by new work and have been unattached by the poster.] Now it has a subtle bleed over the surface. I have attached the usual preview background pictures. Also, here is some moderate blurring of the planet edges. Additionally here is some heavy blur.

quin,
[This picture is deprecated by new work and has been unattached by the poster.] Here is a version with the blurred planet edge but no unintentional blur over its face. In 8 and 9 I used a blur brush size that was considerably too large.

Needs to be less pink and more red, you should be aiming this at Ulukai so he can integrate this with his background.

Ulukai,
[This picture has been used in the skybox and has been unattached by the poster. A thumbnail remains.] Here is one I think we will all be happy with so that you can place it in your skybox.
Quin,
Thanks for following up with direction.

Sorry for the delay. I wasn't at home yesterday and we're having friends over today, but I'll try to upload a modified version today.
Thanks Dratz for the images.

Attached there are 3 versions of the improved version.

2 similar to the previous version I posted but with blurred edges and some blends.
1 with the last image posted by Dratz.

Quin, if you want more blur or bleeding I can upload the image seperately so someone else can add it to it, because I'm not all that great with GIMP either... I can reupload another skybox after that if desired.

I'm liking the progress I'm seeing here, although I'm beginning to wonder if things are pushing the boundaries of realism. Granted, it's a fictional skybox for a sci-fi themed game, so artistic license has free rein.

Strangely enough, I found this article about an Australian eclipse from back in November, and some stuff about how eclipses work. http://www.cnn.com/2012/11/13/world/asia/solar-eclipse-australia-explained/index.html

Just out of curiosity, in the RE logo, what is the object which is causing the eclipse?

Is the image based solely on https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Sola ... 9_4_NR.jpg alt. http://www.fotopedia.com/items/flickr-1264349089 ?

Ok, it seems like the original image is http://www.lucnix.be/v/Astronomy/Solar+ ... r.jpg.html which is licensed under a version-unspecified CC-BY-SA license.
Wikipedia has the same image https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Sola ... 1999_4.jpg under specifically any current version (1.0 or 2.0 or 2.5 or 3.0) of the CC-BY-SA license.

I'm going to go by the information on wikipedia here and say that the image used in the skybox is based on the same image as on wikipedia and therefore available under version 3.0 of the license, and this is what we are using in RE.

As far as I can see the image of the far side of the moon is not used whatsoever in the skybox? Anyways I presume that the image in question is this one http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/LRO/n ... rside.html and likewise on wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Moon_Farside_LRO.jpg which notes that
This file is in the public domain because it was solely created by NASA. NASA copyright policy states that "NASA material is not protected by copyright unless noted"
and since NASA is a US government agency that is actually a valid case of Public Domain, and should be fine.

Wikipedia can be a dubious primary source because of the tendency to plagiarize material. I do not recommend using it as an alternative when you have another source that seems to be associated with the original author. The far side of the moon is on the surface of the Red Eclipse planet. It is darkened by me and blurred some by ulukai but it is in the image for the skybox, my gimp project and can be used when more contrast is desired later. I recommend crediting it.

MekArcade has now been merged into Red Eclipse's SVN repository, if you're looking to check out the (very unrefined) prototype I have. Basically, from this point development on MekArcade will be done alongside Red Eclipse, so if you're looking for something to do, well, basically everything needs to be done for this new thread.

Hi folks,
Here is a 1024x1024 planet I made with GIMP at 4096x4096. I used a practical tutorial at http://www.gimptalk.com/index.php?/topi ... -tutorial/ . I will furnish the project file on request. It is intended to be in the style of the existing planet in the red eclipse skybox. I was hoping that the extra detail would allow for more beauty while still adhering to the advantages of the existing formula.
I place this work under a Image license. If you have any thoughts, comments or advice on this matter please post about them here.

I was putting it in the existing spacescape skybox I made to show here what it would look like, but this is what I get. It's got probably something to do with the transparant background you used.

Ulukai,
I thank you for your interest. In my experience spacescape improperly interprets transparency with pngs. To overcome this limitation in the program, use src_alpha for the planet image. Next you will want to place a transparency screen, basically a black disc, as a layer behind your planet billboard and in front of your billboard star layer. This will prevent stars from showing through your planet. Then generate save and export your scene as you normally would.
Some folks I have played with in the game have asked for smoother stars for this skybox. Ergo, please consider the settings in the image for the star layer, particularly using billboards instead of points, but including and making closer stars punch through the red nebula while it saturates distant stars with red. I will attach a picture of the spacescape settings and alpha-screen image for you.

Ulukai,
Was that explanation not communicated sufficiently? Whether it is clarification or loading and saving your spacescape project file with the replacement planet so that you can see how it looks and adjust it, I am happy to help. As usual, I will watch for your reply.

Dratz-C, I've been quite busy at work and IRL so I have little spare time atm, but the clarification was sufficient :) I have a version ready with your image, but without further changes. I will upload it soon and might include the source file as well so you can try to adjust it as you see fit. It is then up to Quin to pick his favorite as a RE skybox was his wish so I put the final decision in his hands.

As I promised, here is the existing skybox with the latest version of the planet that Dratz has provided. I also include the source XML file so that you can go ahead and make changes yourself. I let Quin decide which version he wants to put in the repository as it is kind of the Official Red Eclipse SKybox (tm) ;)

Ulukai,
Thanks for your reply. Here are my edits of the spacescape xml and redeclipse skybox. As requested by a few players, I changed all point layers to billboards in order to smooth the look of the stars. I then copied over every other setting from the 1_5 to the 1_9 because changing from points to billboards erases everything in those layers. I next upped the sizes of the new billboard stars by 4 times over those of the point layers to compensate for the fadeoff and borders in the billboards versus the pure color square blocks of the points. I fixed the artifact in the compositing of the black disc by changing the colors from white to black. I saved often. Finally, I exported to pngs of the same dimension as the set you uploaded for me and put the images through PNGOptim, saving an average of 20% on the file sizes.

Hi Folks,
Here is a set of comparison and contrast screenshots. These are lossless pngs captured at 1080p with 16x antialiasing and anisotropic filtering and are about 550Kb each. The first is of Ulukai's present skybox in Dutility.
skybox_comparison_contrast_00.png
The second is of my recent work to make the planet pop and distant stars blend.

Does anyone have any thoughts or constructive suggestions on this possible progress on the Red Eclipse skybox?

Hi Again Folks,
Here is my GIMP project file for "Red Eclipse Skybox Planet Redux" [with the other smaller GIMP project that adds the penumbra] along with the license text in a zip file. Because the archive is over 40MB, I uploaded it to my dropbox account instead of attaching it to my post. For reference, "A Better Planet Tutorial" was my guide in the creation process. [I updated the archive to include the smaller GIMP project file where I added the penumbra around a smaller rescale of the larger planet project image. Since there are only 2 project files, it should be easy to find.]
