1 Levelpack and 1 theme

Postby leovilok » 01 Apr 2012, 12:58

Hello everyone, I played Me & My Shadow for 1 week and found the game awesome, so thank you all  .
Also, it made me want to create something, so here is what I made :

Levelpack: Geometry to Chaos

A 10 levels trip from a geometrical world to the land of chaos.
Some levels can be added/tweaked/removed (e.g. "Lines" is not very good and "Perspective" is a bit confusing I think). Feel free to do it !

Theme: Pixel Castel

I took some parts of Cloudscape and adapted some parts of a platformer asset i found on OGA (Monsterboy in Wonder World mockup assets by surt). It's not a great theme but still I think it's fun :D .

I haven't finished the levelpack yet but it seems quite challenging.
Good job. :)

I quite like this theme, although the background could perhaps be changed (seems a bit stretched)?
Finally a theme in colour. :D

edit: The line and player/shadow sprites can be removed since the game will automatically use the ones from the configured theme when none is defined.

Would you like your levelpack and/or your theme in the addon manager?

Yes, it would be great :D

Yes, i didn't managed to do/find something good ... maybe I can do something based on Supertux's cave background.

Hello leovilok,

leovilok {l Wrote}:Yes, it would be great :D

I've added them, if you want something changed/updated just ask.
We hope to simplify this process in the future by allowing users to upload themself.

Before you install them using the addon manager I recommend you rename/(re)move the folders of them to prevent two packs/themes with the same name.

Very original theme and challenging puzzles :D. I might be able to help with setting targets for your levels, but I'll have to finish them first ;).

Thank you all for answers :D !
Here are 2 new backgrounds, not much better than the previous one, but that work if you want to quickly replace the ugly blue thing :p .
background.02.png
background.04.png

(they are adapted from Supertux backgrounds, so I suppose they are GPL licenced)

I think there could be independant themes for GUI, tileset, characters, and background.

I can't install my theme from the add-on manager, even after deleting the previous folder I used. (It falls back to the Cloudscape theme)
It was marked as installed so i tried to uninstall it but it didn't worked.
Then I deleted the corresponding line in the ~/.config/meandmyshadow/installed_addons file.
So it was marked as uninstalled but didn't worked when reinstalled.
And only the text files, some parts of the tiles.png and background.png, and a strange, not readable swap.png file, were written in ~/.local/share/meandmyshadow/theme/Pixel Castle/ .
Finally here is the console output of when I try to install the theme :
Error while writing data to disk.
Error while writing data to disk.
Error while writing data to disk.

The levelpack installed well.

I'm on Chakra Linux (based on arch) 32bits and I use the meandmyshadow-mdv2011-32 binary from the Linux binary package.

I hope it will help a bit :)

It fails when extracting the archive for some reason, it can't be a bug in libarchive since the levelpack works fine.

What if you download it from here and extract it to see if those files are also corrupted:

Tip: When the level starts press Tab to see a few buttons that are otherwise out of sight. ;)

MCMic {l Wrote}:It really convince me that theme and levepacks should be linked :P

Yeah, but there's a problem with that.
Bundling them in one zip would mean that it if other packs also use this theme it will be downloaded multiple times.
But if we separate them there needs to be some sort of dependency system, which will require a lot of work.
Perhaps when we start working on the new addon system we can built in such a system.

Really simple dependency system seems possible.

I managed to do the first two levels, but the third… I don't understand what I'm supposed to do.

[EDIT] Ok, just managed to do it… There seems to be a lot of useless elements in these levels that are just here to mess with you…

Edward_Lii {l Wrote}:What if you download it from here and extract it to see if those files are also corrupted:
http://meandmyshadow.sourceforge.net/ga ... Castle.zip

It extracts well with ark ...
I tried again in M&MS and the extraction seem to have been stopped at a close level (close to what I got last time).

MCMic {l Wrote}:There seems to be a lot of useless elements in these levels that are just here to mess with you…

->Level 1 : I don't see that much useless elements (but those used for symmetry : we are in the geometry part after all ;) )
->Level 2 : Yes, some parts are useless, to keep the Perspective concept (I hope the 3d cubes are still visible, isn't it?), but it's still too easy :p (you can finish it in less tan 10 seconds) so here is the new version :
3d.txt
New "Perspective" level (rename the file in "3d.map" as I couldn't upload a .map file on the forum)
(3.21 KiB) Downloaded 454 times

->Level 3 : it's the worst I made  I may remove it if everybody find it really bad ...

There is also a way to cheat I want to remove in the Columns level, here is the new file :
columns.txt
New "Columns" level (also replace .txt by .map)
(1.26 KiB) Downloaded 421 times

There are also fast ways in level 5 "Breaking" (but this one is difficut to do or to fix so I keep it), and maybe in level 1 (but I didn't managed to do it so I think that's OK  )

Do others have this problem?
You can try to remove the zip from the tmp cache (~/.cache/meandmyshadow/tmp/).

I've updated the addon, you can update using the in-game addon manager.

Thanks again for making this levelpack. :)

A lot of useless stuff in perspective, including the shadow.
I did not see the cubes, sorry. They are too big to be on screen completely so it's hard to see them.

PS : Now I'm stuck at pattern…

MCMic {l Wrote}:PS : Now I'm stuck at pattern…

I got stuck there too ;).

---SPOILERS---

1 Tab once, it's easier that way.
2 Put your shadow on the highest stair on the top left, without leaving your starting block.
3 Then jump down (while recording) to the block three down and three to the right from your starting position. Hopefully your shadow will land on the normal block right of the starting block. You might need to stop the mimic to prevent your shadow from falling of.
4 Then jump 1 down and 1 to the right followed by another small jump to the right. Activate this recording when the time is right, your shadow has to stand on a shadow block that is being flown over by spikes ! The second small jump will land him on the normal block next to the exit.
5 Get your shadow above the exit. Let him walk the stairs.
6 Jump to the swap and use it. Watch out for spikes.

See the attachment for my attempt :D.

The Shadow is not useless anymore I think (update the levelpack and say me if it's still useless).

I don't do it exactly that way but it seems to work :) , I think there are multiple solutions in Pattern (not easy ones though ;) )

PS : I got killed in replay mode :? ! with even the "press r to restart message' ! (and pressing r won't restart the game)
edit: new recording : it's working.

I don't understand what you mean, 3 what?

@leovilok : You should add some space around you levels, it's displeasant to be so near the edge of the window, and when the shadow is on the top shadow block, we can't see its position, it's inconvenient.

The third block from the top and third from the left.
I accidentally counted the starting block as 1, meaning you'll have to jump 2 spaces down and 2 spaces to the right.

From here, the starting postition.

Here are the automatic records I made for my levels :
Geometry to Chaos.zip
The files from /records/autosave/Geometry to Chaos/ of my user data folder
(27.77 KiB) Downloaded 439 times

I hope it can be helpful for somebody (even if the ways presented are not the only ways sometimes, even not the main way for "Breaking")

Is there a way to watch recordings easily ?

I just found an other way in Pattern, so I try the text demo  :

{l Code}: {l Select All Code}
1) Jump on your Shadow :
M █           ██
S█           █⌻
░     ░     ░
    █     █
     █   ⇩ █

░     ░     ░
    █     █
     █     █   ⟳
░  ░  ░  ░  ░  ░

2) Go to the save place :
 ─╗           ██
S█ ╲         █⌻
░   ╲ ░     ░
    █╲    █

░     ░     ░
    █     █
     █     █   ⟳
░  ░  ░  ░  ░  ░

3) Move your Shadow this way
(you will have to go to the next block
and your shadow will have to jump on you) :
 ╭──╮        ╭S
╭╯█  ╲      ╭╯██
 █    ╲    ╭╯█⌻
░     ░╲ ╭─┪░

░     ░     ░
    █     █
     █     █   ⟳
░  ░  ░  ░  ░  ░

3) Go here, use the switch and you are done :
              S

Hello leovilok,

leovilok {l Wrote}:Is there a way to watch recordings easily ?

Not yet, but there should be. ;)
One option would be to allow a recording file as command line argument.
We can even create a File association for KDE/GNOME, meaning that a click on the recordings file is enough, although such service only work for system wide installs.

Perhaps we can even create a service for this using the Web port.

Great walk-through, I must say your levels prove to be a real challenge. :)

Hello ctdabomb,

It seems to be a problem with the level. You see there is a normal block and a shadow block on it. Player is colliding with the half-hidden normal block. I not sure how this can be fixed...Maybe changing order in the level file. Anyway thank you for reporting this!
