Best way to connect with other RE players

Best way to connect with other RE players

Postby inpersona64 » 07 Aug 2011, 22:18

Is there some way or program that all of us use to connect to and with each other to that we could possibly friend each other and join same servers in this game. Like for example, Xfire, Steam, and Raptr. I know none of the mentioned programs support this game, but if most of us use one of these programs or a different program that we could all use so we could connect with each other, that would be great. For example, I use all three (username: inpersona64 <- obviously). It would just be nice to find a way to make friends in this game. Cause not too many people connect and talk on the forums. And we could really spread the word if we could connect with each other better.

Actually, dont mind the last post. There is a program called Desura. Apparently it supports Red Eclipse (as well as some other indie games). You guys can check out the website. It's very similar to Steam.

Desura seems interesting, but I can't find a lot of tangible information on it other than it is an offshoot of Mod/IndieDB. Of particular interest to me are the Steam-like services (eg. stats tracking and achievements), which would be made even better if it wasn't Windows-only at this point (but from what little I did dig up, there is a Linux client in the works).

Considering they seem perfectly happy providing a Free and Open Source game on their store for, well, free; do you think it would be a sellout to consider integrating this into Red Eclipse? There would be no charge involved unless the Desura guys insist on some token in payment for the use of their services.

"Selling out" is always such an insubstantial phrase. Only the most irrational of fanatics would consider something like adopting a distribution service that doesn't impose any conditions on the game to be "selling out." I don't think anything short of making RE closed source and priced could be construed as selling out, though in all honestly there'd be pretty heavy opposition if there would be a mandatory charge.

I'd say to go for Desura integration if it is easily possible, especially if it could lead to more popularity and foster a more integrated community.

From what I've read on their forums, Desura does take ~15% of profits if the game has a price, which would make it seem likely that they would charge a fee if the game was free, but I can't find anything that actually spells that out. I'm sure someone with an account would be able to look into their documentation for developers.

Hey I just want us all to be able to connect and play together. Develop a friend's list for starters. I see a lot of people in servers during the day. It would be nice to get to add some people and get to know them.

I'm not a fan of such apps, but ok, I'm going to try desura, just to stay in touch ;)

Alternative Oldskool option: some IRC channels where players could meet, chatter, etc.
Maybe #redeclipsefans, #refans, etc.?

Now that I think about it, Desura might be a little overkill for what we're discussing (though I still would support integrating it). It probably would suffice to just have a "friends" function and perhaps to be able to chat privately/outside of a match.

There's an IRC client built into the game which will connect you to #redeclipse on irc.freenode.net (our development channel) by default (I think we hid it under "Help -> Live Support"), and there is a 'Chat' link on the website which will take you there via a webchat service. Would this suffice if it were implemented better?

If "implemented better" means that it would be possible to save a list of friends/contacts (which would probably have to be intransient through name changes), then it probably would suffice. There are almost certainly more features that would be nice, but at essence, that is what seems to be necessary.

To be honest, I wasn't aware of the built-in IRC client

That would require a lot of work creating backends and registration systems, which is a lot of work for one guy. This is one of the reasons I was interested in making use of Desura's services (much of the work is then done for me and all we have to do is connect to it).

I would be happy if there is a separated channel on IRC just for chit-chatting, organizing tournaments, etc. (#redeclipse is for the -dev- gods right? or not?
I will install & try desura anyway, just to see what it has to offer.

Yeah, it occurred to me that it was probably a lot to ask. I'd take a feature-rich service like Desura over an improved chat feature regardless. I'll check out Desura over the next few days like fluxord.

Hey if the game could be integrated into such programs like Desura or Xfire, that would work. If not, I'd be fine with a friend's list on the Red Eclipse client itself. Because if we can get some kind of communication going on between games, teams might just win, not just because they are playing with someone who is really good (Kobe Bryant) or because they have really great ping. Not to mention a friend's list might also help for more clans to arise.

Installed & tried desura. My Reaction: Burn in with FIRE and MAGNETS

Nevermind, just figured out that Desura still has the Red Eclipse 1.0 Ides version and doesn't recognize the 1.1 Supernova version (i.e. you can't play it using desura). Even if you run the wizard to find installed games, it won't recognize it... also the UI of desura is extremely laggy even on a top notch PC (I would like to kick them developers in the lows).

FTM, I guess i'll use it as a sort of IM.

Really? Cause everytime i play Red Eclipse, I start up Desura and launch the game from there. I had the game already installed and i had Desura find the directory folder. It was a bit complicated but it was definitely easier than uninstalling RE and redownloading and installing it via Desura. lol

BTW, i'm still trying to figure out how to go about adding one on Desura. I think i sent request. Do you always need a link to their page to add them to friends? If so:

For some reason, it will not add RedEclipse when I run the tool, even if I add the path manually. Inpersona, could you explain how you got it to recognize your install directory?

When RE didn't automatically show up, what i did is go click on the Desura icon in the Desura window to the top left, go to Tools, Add Game Installed, change the language from English to Spanish and then Back to English, then click Save. Switch to Performance tab, then Switch to the Games tab. Next to Manually Add Game, I went to Red eclipse, then i browsed for the directory and then clicked Refresh Games. Then I closed Desura, and opened it back up.

I'm sorry that i took so many steps, its just that when i was trying to manually add the game, i couldn't switch from the General tab to the Games tab without switching a setting and saving it. So thats how i did it.

You know of anyone who has an open Teamspeak or Ventrilo server that we all could chat in?

To speak with other players, go on RedEclipseUnion.webs.com

There is a mumble server that we can all go on..... Also on IRC, the channel is #reu
