Spicing up the banner logo

Spicing up the banner logo

Postby svenskmand » 02 Aug 2011, 13:15

I have never really been satisfied with the banner logo so I decided to spice it up a bit. What do you think is it a keeper?

A big improvement :D

Although one critique is that maybe the "Dark, Damp, & Dangerous" is a bit too small.

Ok I will change that now much bigger approximately? 20% or so?

Edit: how about this then?

Nice. :)

Another thing that could be tested is to move the subtitle (Dark, damp, ...) into the "holes" (the parts where the OpenDungeons "wave" has its maximums).

I am not sure what you mean but is it like this? (This is not finished I still need the white fade in the text but it takes time to make)

Edit: I now added the white gradient in the middle.

Almost, but not exactly. But I like your interpretation even better than what I imagined. ;)

With the subtitle also displaying like a coherent wave the logo looks much more "monolithic", what is good IMHO.

Unfortunately I did not check whatever the font was open source or not, it turns out to be a mircosoft font, which is some of the worst properiatery fonts. So I switched to Museum Foundry font, which is licensed under SIL's Open Font License.

Hope you still like it :)

Maybe we could use this as the font for ingame text? It looks pretty nice :) If anybody has a suggestion for a better open source font then please let me know and I can make a version of the logo with it and then we can decide if that is better or not.

Still looks good.

Yeah, I think we can use it also ingame. We don't have much text anways. For the console we will use a monospaced font and the rest are mostly tooltips that most people won't probably read. :D

It would still be nice for the tool tips and the counters and the main menu :)

As long as it is easy readable, I don't have any preference about the font. :D

What do you think about the readability of the Museum Foundry font then?

Somehow "Damp, Dark and Dangerous" sounds better to me than "Dark, Damp and Dangerous"... not sure why :p

Edit: Maybe because it gets progressively worse? e.g. "damp" is not very dangerous, "dark" a bit more and well "dangerous" is dangerous :p

Maybe because our brains are used to the order of the alphabet. "Damp" would be before "Dark" in a natural alphabetical order. :D

To me "Dark, Damp and Dangerous" sounds best. I do not know if that is because we have had that so or if it is for some other reason.

I think the slogan came before my time here, but I always have the words "Deep, Dark and Dangerous" in my mind, when I think about OD. Don't know why, but this sounds better, maybe because I always have to look up "damp" in the dictionary and then find out that it doesn't really fit in. :D

Yeah damp does not really make that much sense. Deep makes more sense, but does not sound as good :S

You want the 'Deep' after 'Dark' IMHO.

"Dark, Deep, and Dangerous" Hmmm

"Dark, Deadly, and Dangerous" Redundant.

"Dark, Dirty, and Dangerous" Nah.

"Dark, Drafty, and Dangerous" :D

"Dark, Discombobulating, and Dangerous" :D :D

"Dark, Disestablishmentarianism Dangerous" :?

"Dark, Drunk, and Disheveled." :eew:

"Dark, Doom, and Danger" EDIT: "Dark, Doomy, and Dangerous"

I also think the slogan should be a bit larger in the banner. The "Dark" starting nearer the 'p' and the "Dangerous" starting after the 'g' might make it more readable.

It does not have to be three words all starting with d, it could also be a sentence, like "it's good to be bad" was in DK 2.

You mean a different slogan every time the game starts? I would prefer just one which is on the actual banner logo.
