Strategic Initiative: Now works on Linux!

Postby fil512 » 10 Jun 2011, 23:14

Hi everyone,

UPDATE: NOW WORKS ON LINUX! (Thanks IsharaComix!!!)

I've spent the past few years building a free open-source online strategy game called Strategic Initiative.

http://www.strategicinitiative.org.

We have an active player community and always welcome newcomers! It's a game of exploration, conquest, and technology advancement played over 10 days. I don't know what you call that genre; "slow real-time"? The economy is super-simple--the only commodity is city-time for building new units. All the complexity has been focused on tactical unit engagement: naval, land, air, missiles, supply, interdiction. It's a lot of fun!

The game is loosely based on a GNU online multiplayer game called Empire that I lead for a few years back in the 90s. I also did a lot of LPMUD coding back in the day...

The license is GNU GPLv3. Here's a screenshot of what the map looks like in the game.

Would love to see some new players, and would especially love help with the build for Mac & Linux!

Thanks,
Ken

I first came across this game on the FreeGameDev planet, and when I was reading about it, I was saying "Wow. This sounds a lot like Empire."

I couldn't believe my eyes when I found out who was developing this game. I've been trying to get into Empire for the longest time, but I just can't commit to it since I don't want my grades to drop.

OK I've uploaded 32 bit and 64 bit versions of a linux client. I'd highly appreciate if someone could test them out for me!

So my java swt client is working well under Mac and Windows, but in Linux it thread-locks. Does anyone have a tool they'd recommend to locate the source of the threadlock?

Strategic Initiative is now ported to Linux!

Postby fil512 » 02 Jul 2011, 05:16

A big thanks to Barry Peddycord (IsharaComix) who spent hours helping me troubleshoot porting my open source online multiplayer strategy game to Linux!

Could someone sign up for a game and confirm they're able to move units around with the new Linux version of the client? Details of the game can be found here:
