Beastie kart

Some news from the Beastie kart!

I just added animations, reduced the size of the shadow and exported with the starting-to-be-usable Blender 2.5 kart exporter (thanks Auria for the bugfix :)) and am announcing release 0.2 :)

Downloadable from here:
- kart, ready to be integrated (copy/paste in the karts directory): beastie-kart-0.2.tar.bz2
- sources (.xcf, .blend...): beastie-kart-src-0.2.tar.bz2

Still the same BSD license.
It still has its 2675 vertices and 2942 faces as I haven't touched the geometry...
Last time, Kinsu, you seemed to be interested in reducing the number of faces/vertices?

I think the animations are honest, but not to the point of being "good"...please tell me what you think of it :)

EDIT: Ah, about the icon, please tell me which one you prefer:
- number 1:

- number 2:

Please test also the new static packages for FreeBSD:

supertuxkart-0.7.2-rc1-freebsd-i386.tar.bz2 (32-bit)

supertuxkart-0.7.2-rc1-freebsd-amd64.tar.bz2 (64-bit)

Enjoy the new static packages with the new Beastie Kart :)

I prefer number 2. Number 1 looks more painted and doesn't fit well with the other icons' style IMO.

Well thanks, seems there is some interest in my work, but I'm worried, I wouldn't like it to be considered spam in all those forums...

As for the icon, apparently it looks like people (except xeno74 ^^) prefer the icon from Wormux (number 2)...
So I tried to see what was wrong in mine, played a bit with Inkscape and I hope the result is closer to the style of STK :)
I made 3 tentatives, here they are:
Image

As I have the corresponding SVGs I can choose any resolution.

Thanks for giving your opinion about those :)

Nice job, Funto :)
I committed Beastie to SVN, congratulations!

For now I just used Yekcim's icon, but if people vote for another icon I will change it

Hmm after having another look at the existing icons in STK, I figured that most of them didn't have any border around the eyes, so here are other versions, which I think are better:
Image
I also introduced another one (top-right) as you could see, and changed slightly the shape of the eyes on this one.

Personally I prefer the top-left one, then the top-right one.

Here is a the image from YeKCim at a better resolution:

Did I finally manage to get something cute enough or am I still far from it? :p.
Please answer frankly, it's no problem if everybody prefers the one from YeKCim, I would just get so horribly sad...
(I'm joking, really, tell me what you think)

I'd vote for either your top-left or top-right one, for the record.

I say top left. The line across his cheeks makes him look weird. Maybe give him a little red blush on his cheeks.

I love the animations!

I thought when driving the kart for the first time that it was a bit too large, but when checking the sizes it turns out that it's not that big.

Great kart!

I say top right :) The shape of the head is not so round as on the top left picture.

Just to recapitulate:

- YeKcim's one: Auria
- top-left: Arthur (or top-right), asciimonster, me
- top-right: Arthur (or top-left), KroArtem
hiker? xeno74?

hiker >> thanks, my pleasure :) But yes the animations could be made better, they are not original at all (contrary to Tux and his terminal, or GNU and his teapot, yeah :) ). Plus, when turning, the steering wheel does not move...
Actually, the kart itself is not animated at all, I think we could do interesting animations using the eyebrows and the teeth of the car, plus adding fire, flames and smoke would be cool :) (but that needs some programming I think ^^).

asciimonster >> yes I think the red blush could be interesting for the top-right one, it would give a better understanding of the shape and would be nicer :)

I actually don't care too much. I doubt that anyone notice the differences in the game anyway :) The only time when the icons are big is during kart selection, and people will be looking at the 3d karts. And during

Your animation is actually what I wanted the animations to be like.

Plus, when turning, the steering wheel does not move...

That's not really visible anyway.

Actually, the kart itself is not animated at all, I think we could do interesting animations using the eyebrows and the teeth of the car, plus adding fire, flames and smoke would be cool :) (but that needs some programming I think ^^).

Well, we have flames (nitro), smoke (depending on surface when skidding). In one of the older versions we had (iirc) smoke all the time, but disbanded the idea because it just looked ... too smoky (but perhaps we should have spent more time tweaking the particle engine ;) ).

Nice work ! For the icon, I would prefer the top-right (the top-left is too round to me :) ), but it should have a light gradient as YekCim's one to be well integrated among other STK's icons.

OK so I think if we combine all feedback we will have a winner icon :)
Funto, can you make an icon with Kinsu's suggested gradient, and asciimonster's suggested cheeks? I think this would make a great icon :)

And I didn't actually vote for Yekcim's icon; I voted for Yekcim's icon before you made your new icons. Now I'm just undecided ^^

If my vote still counts, I would go for the top right. The top left is just too round IMO.

Personally I disagree, as I said, I think it is very important to take care of the details when making a game (although we also need not to forget the main topics).
Just my opinion :)

So here are versions with a little blush applied to the cheeks, as requested.
I also think they are better this way :)

Round one ("top-left"):

"With cheeks" one ("top-right"):

Thanks people for giving your opinion, I hope that's the best way for the community to be happy with the final result :)

good job, thanks :) I added your icon to SVN (the not-too-round one that most people seem to prefer)
