Nice write up. Blender has come a long way.

One thing that bugs me is the versioning. This is not a 2.X release. This is a major new release with a huge overhaul of many aspects of the software. Just call it Blender 3.

Pretty awesome, I've been using 2.8 beta for some time now, it really brings a huge improvement.

So is Blender really going to become THE 3D industry standard now? How is e.g. Maya doing -- is it declining or is it here to stay?

I doubt it... at most it will become more popular with cash starved indie studios. The big film studios etc are going to stay with Maya etc.

Another cool new open source modeling program is Dust3D. Also got a grant from Epic games: https://dust3d.org/

Dust3D looks nice as well, more free SW is always welcome.

Actually I agree with you -- even if Blender surpassed Maya technologically, Maya has long been established and will resist change just because of that, and also because of the company standing behind it... just like Windows. Anyway, Blender is doing great despite all this, which proves it's really good.

In the end it is a question of training people. If for some reason all new people they want to hire are Blender experts but have little idea about Maya they will switch. But since it is the opposite way around the additional license fees are not really relevant in comparison to the cost of training people and the initial productivity loss.
