Why _just_ CC-BY 4.0? A more complete list of licenses that are acceptable should be provided somewhere.

"compatible with" doesn't mean "just".

However I talked to fr1tz on IRC about the music, and he seems to have plans for a dynamic system using specially made tracks instead of public songs like the above. Personally I think it wouldn't hurt to include some nice existing songs for the time being, but fr1tz disagrees and has the last word on that ;)

I'm not using against already available music. I just think that the first couple of tracks the player hears should be 100% original made-for-TOL.

@license: I'm interested what exactly are the most prominent compatible licenses?
It would be a good idea to have a list for lookup. It makes sense to research that question just once.

I think dedicated music is not essential but an option for later.
Finding good existing cc-by music is no problem. How many different tracks would be sensible to ship?
I guess we don't want to bloat the download too much...

CC0, MIT, BSD etc. Basically anything that isn't copyleft. Personally I don't see why the media couldn't also include CC-by-SA stuff (in general), but I guess it makes sense to stick to the CC-by for now.

This basically narrows it down to CC-0 and CC-BY.
Why is copyleft a potential problem? Regarding the license of the game itself: don't we have the freedom to ship assets as we wish?

Well this is getting a bit OT, but CC-by is what fr1tz promised in the crowd-funding campaign. However this doesn't necessarily mean it has to be like that forever. But there are also certain advantages to stay all CC-by, so since there is currently no real need to include SA stuff (just see all the cool CC-by music) I think it is fine to stay with it.

Alright, let's talk main menu music. Dynamic in-game music is still some time away, but an awesome and memorable main menu tune could really help shape the game. Like I said before, I'd like TOL's music to be original, so stuff posted in response to this should serve as inspiration for musicians, and will most likely not be used itself (unless it's *really* awesome).

I pretty much consider psytrance (esp. hi-tech) the "official" music of rotc/tol, but it's obviously way too energetic for the main menu.

I don't know a lot of glitch/click music, so maybe someone who knows more about slower/relaxed yet glitchy music can help me out here, in the meantime something like https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wpeiHtxex_o would work quite well imho. Its fatal flaw in terms of being used as theme music for something is that it lacks a hook, something that makes it stick in your mind.

My resarch revealed one specific track by "Kingarsus" for the menu, starting at second 34
https://www.jamendo.com/de/track/26655/stay-calm (BY-NC-SA)

For ingame music I found that other french guy "-BS-" some of the best fitting tracks in no particular order:
https://www.jamendo.com/en/track/634203/sciences-exclu (BY-SA)
https://www.jamendo.com/en/track/479380/highter (BY)
https://www.jamendo.com/en/track/479377/e-volution (BY)
https://www.jamendo.com/en/track/839343 ... -font-font (BY-SA)
https://www.jamendo.com/en/track/721662 ... prod-remix (BY-SA)

The start of some songs sometimes needs to be faded out.
I'm not typically into that style of music but while diving into TOL level editing I got the impression those tracks are really good.
